i agree the mods turned this into a geek thread and we are getting visitors arguing about redundancy

The denizens turned this into a geek thread. The Mods only acknowledged it.

Yup, ruined all the good fun. We used to look at pictures and talk about cameras and lenses.

Think I should move it to the "Computers" section so they'll start a real chat thread here?

GMAE all. Any geeks left? If so please explain South Beach North Beach to me.

In computer terms, Northbeach and Southbeach are slang for the northbridge and southbridge core chipsets. The CPU has to communicate with the rest of the motherboard components. This communication is divided into two sections: the northbridge and the southbridge.

The northbridge chip communicates between the CPU and higher-level functions, mostly RAM and video. It provides address bus control, addressing extensions, refresh clocking, and other such stuff.

The southbridge chip communicates between the CPU and all lower-level functions, such as the I/O bus, SATA and PATA controllers, audio systems, etc. It does the grunt work for the CPU.

Proper selection of these two chips dramatically affect how the CPU will operate. In essence, the real CPU consists of the CPU proper plus the northbridge and southbridge chips.

The northbridge asnd southbridge chips are a fixed part of the motherboard. This is why it is so important to select the proper motherboard for the computer's primary task. There is no single "perfect" computer. The hottest office machine out there makes a lousy gaming machine, and vice versa.

Is that geeky enough for you?

North Beach is when I go swimming in Lake Huron (to the north of me). South Beach is when I go swimming in Lake Erie (to the south of me).

I don't know if that will work. Think they can keep everything straight?

I know for sure that my post count has dropped dramatically.

Me, too. I mean after all, I have absolutely no interest in hyper-expensive computers with blue-LED lit interiors and skyscraper heatsinks requiring wind-machines for cooling. Such machines are not a requirement of any aspect of still photography.

So what is there for a still-photography enthusiast to comment upon?
