Just on a side note, as we talked about SSDs yesterday:
Someone managed to wear one out with only 11TB of writes...
http://forum.notebookreview.com …drive-health-warning.html (external link)

This is why you need to chose the right SSD :)

It's also about making sure your SSD is setup properly so you don't have useless writes going to it. :)

Also, 11TB of writes... to a 128gb drive that is only using 100gb. That's like rewriting the entire drive 110 times... thats insane.

All you non computer folk just need to start talking about what you are interested about, we start talking computers, then you guys stop posting, so we have no choice but to continue talking about computers. :p

Well that's been tried.

I know, the adobe rebates for students are great, 20% of the regular retail price.
-> Only I don't need someone to set things for me :) I do it myself.

I really couldn't care less about being able to set things up myself. I'm sure I could do it, I just would rather not. It bores me.

I can do so many other things in life that most people are incapable of that I really have no interest in joining the world of geeks and building computers.

That looks rather expensive... but to be honest, why the colourful design?

It's not as if stare at the RAM in your computer... it gets installed and is then hidden away from view.

We can comment on the madness of it all?? I dunno, I'm done my upgrade. Out of all this madness I got the idea to wander over to the campus computer store and check out the price of software. Found that I could get CS5 for $800 cheaper than Future Shop was selling it for. So I bought it. Then decided that I would upgrade the RAM on my computer to run the program properly. Bought Windows 7 to make the most of the RAM. Paid a geek $20 to install everything.

I payed out about $500 for everything and CS5 normally costs about $1000 here.

That's the extent to which I have been involved in this frenzy. I would post more pictures but I am currently trying to figure out CS5 and it's driving me nuts.

Well, I, too, just upgraded my wife's computer. I mentioned it in passing: ASUS MB, Athlon quad-core 955, 16GB DDR3 RAM, 2TB hard drive for C, 1TB hard drive for D, 2 DVD/CD R/W drive (one with LightScribe), 22-in-1 card reader, 8 USB 3.0 and 4 USB 2.0 ports; Win 7 Pro, external 2TB backup drive, and 875VA UPS. All very routine, and nary a blue LED in sight.

It would save you money... on that note though ;) not a lot of "building" with my laptop.
My current one got a change from an HDD to a SSD, that's it - else there is nothing that can be or is worth upgrading.

Yes, it would be possible to get more than 4GB of RAM and a 64Bit OS, but it's too much of a hassle for my liking...
On a side note: If you do something yourself you know what you did. ;)

Yeah, which Windows 7 does for you with SSD's.

It's actually not too bad, it's around $100 for a 8GB kit. It's the stuff I suggested to Jay and Tim in their builds (but I chose the black heatsink version :) )

Heh, not that expensive. Computer parts get cheap pretty fast, a year ago when I built this machine I started with only 4GB because 16GB would have cost an arm and a leg. I think the 16GB kit was around $270 (with tax included). The pre-tax price was around $250. If I decide to build Sandybridge within the next year, I might reinstall my old 4GB set back into this computer and use this new 16GB set in the Sandybridge machine since these are the new 1.5V chips that are guaranteed to work with Sandybridge.

As for colorful, some people have clear sides to their case so they can admire it. My current case does not so I haven't put much effort into tidying the cables. The other color option would not have gone well with my color scheme.

The modules were surprising light. My older Dominators had a heavier heat sink on em, but I don't expect problems.

It is great. Corsair is one of the few companies I have had zero issues with, maybe it is luck, but I tend to be willing to pay a little more for Corsair these days... just saves me headaches and time.

Well I only paid my geek $20 for the install and I got a chance to visit with him at the same time. He is first and foremost a friend of mine.

I know what he did to the computer, it's really no big mystery. I just did not want to do it myself.

OK - I'm on 4GB -> 3GB usable and have zero need for more RAM.

That might be the difference between desktops and laptops :D although I would want everything hidden away. If I want to look at beauty I'll take my watch's works over a computer anytime.
On that note - there never ever was a desktop at home :D first computer my mother bought down to the current ones we use - all laptops.

The last thing that I installed blue LED's on (for myself) was a Halloween costume. I have installed them on vehicles but that was part of my job and they were part of a bigger system.
