Hey

My uncle has a couple of old Tamron lenses we used with is Canon FT.

Is it possible to use some kind of adapter to use them with my 400D?
Any of you has any experience with this?

Of course they are all manual lenses, but still, it would be nice to have an alternative to my ONLY kit lens and to give them some use!

Any thoughts?

you need an FD to EF lens adapter. I will warn you, because of the shorter flange distance of the old lenses, the adapter will need to employ a corrective element to achieve infinity focus. the element will act as a short teleconverter (1.26 X for most). from what I have read, buy an adapter that allows you to remove the corrective element. that will allow you to use it for general use with the element, and for more critical macro work without the element.

If they are Tamron, most likely they are the adaptall mount. In this case all you need is a Tamron to EF adapter. They can be found on Ebay for less than $20. They do not have any glass, so there is no image quality loss. I have one and several older Tamron lenses. Some have quite exellent image quality. Give it a shot! It is fun to use some of the older glass on your DSLR. You don't have much to lose.

List the lenses and we can tell you if they are worth any bother.

The Canon FT was launched back in 1966. The Tamron Adaptall II was not launchned until 1979. I would recommend that OP needs to determine if the lens(es) are Tamron Adaptall, or Tamron Adaptall II...and also investigate issues pertaining to trying to use Adaptall II adapters with the earlier Adaptall mount lenses.

thanks for the replies. I will have to take a better look at the lenses and try to understand what kind of mount they are.
Anyway, when i get to take a look at them i will post here what lenses they are and maybe you even know if they are good ones.

But using them would be fun (i am quite a fan of lowtech and toycameras!!) =)

There is information on the web about Tamron lenses, which allows you to look up thelenses and which of the several adapter mounts the lens uses.

Those are indeed Adaptall-2 lenses. See for yourself:

http://adaptall-2.org/lenses/44A.html (external link)
http://adaptall-2.org/lenses/46A.html (external link)

They can be used easily with either an EF mount Adaptall-2, or an Adaptall-2 mount that can then take an adapter for EF (For example, an OM Adaptall-2 and an OM to EF adapter).

Are you using Firefox with Adblock? Add an exception for adaptall-2.org. Adblock doesn't like the use of "ad2" in the page's code.

The lens are okay, nothing special. Adding an adapter will still not give you the features of a modern lens designed for your camera series. Considering the general value and quality of these lens, I'd recommend selling them and buying a newer set of lens.
For example you can buy a Canon USM 28-80 (or 28-90) for about $50 that would surpass the first lens you listed.

yes, the resolution test results for the two lenses indicate that both are pretty average lenses...the reports state 'above average'

i just got a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 :D , but i was asking about this lenses because they are just laying there anyway, so i might as well give them a try if it is not to expensive to get this adapter!
