Starting a Business in NC?

I was told that I need to go to the Secretary of the State website and print out a form to start a business. I went on there, but I couldn't find what looked like the right thing. I found corporate forms and such, but that's not what I'm going for.

Is there anybody that knows what exactly it is that I need? I was also wondering if there is somewhere that lists all the current business names being used?

Never heard of such a thing. Go to the city government offices of the city / county you live in and get a business license. That should be all it takes.

As to business names, getting a list depends upon your municipality. However, when you get a license if you choose a name already taken they will let you know. Good luck on your new business.

Thanks. I had originally been told that the form was on the Sec. State. website, but then when I couldn't find it, I called my father in law and he pointed me to the nccommerce website. I think it's all good now.
