I just got a new 15" 2.2 i7 Macbook Pro and before I even turned the thing on I replaced the spinning hard drive with a 240GB Mercury Extreme Pro SSD 2.5" Solid State Drive along with 8 gigs of ram. I new it would be faster but holy crap, this thing is stupid fast. That SSD makes a huge difference. Now all I need an external hard drive that can take advantage of Thunderbolt and i will be styling! My family wasn't understanding my enthusiasm so I figured I would express it here. Thanks for listening now off to take some giant raw shots and put this power to good use.

I think you'd be better off replacing the optical drive with the SSD, then get an external USB2 enclosure for the optical drive.

I am actually thinking about using the HDD it came with in place of the optical drive and then doing what you said with the optical drive externally. I would love to put another SSD in place of the optical but that is a lot of moolah!

Congrats! I got the same spec but no SSD or Ram upgrade. It's an awesome machine, very impressive indeed!

Hmm... Thats an interesting idea... What kind of mounting hardware is required to mount a HDD in the optical drive bay?

Ditto on the Data Doubler. I just ordered mine from OWC as well. If I was smart I would have done it all at once and saved a few bucks! Oh well, at least I will be quite the expert when it comes to removing the screws from the back of the computer!

We understand and you have our congratulations. I guess this is where I get lucky my wife is an Electrical Engineer and gets excited about cool technology.

Funny story, years ago (22) when I first started working for a major software company we went out and bought a new HD for our computer. This was a big purchase 22 years ago. My friends at work kept asking, how did you talk your wife into letting you buy a big HD. My response, "are you kidding, she was the one asking the sales guy about all the specs."

Have fun with your new machine - sounds great.

Congrats! My MBP is a mid 2009. I swapped the HDD myself the day I got it for a Western Digital and recently upped the RAM to 8gigs. As much as I envy the new machines, I'm still totally in love with mine haha. My only gripe with laptops is the battery. It comes with the territory, sure, but I'm just OCD/anal retentive. haha.

Enjoy the new beast!

Just finished swapping out the optical cd/dvd drive with the 750gig hard drive that it originally came with by using OWC's data doubler. Now I have my 240gig SSD drive handling the OS, apps, etc and the 750gig HDD handling all the storage. SSD speed plus the HDD storage equals a very happy me!

Wow, nice! I can say I'm very jealous! That 240GB SSD must've set you back quite a lot! I'm planning to get an SSD for my MBP soon as well. It's just that I'm just a poor college student and rather wait a bit for SSD prices to drop. Will probably take another 6 months or something.

Wow $75! Thats a bit over priced IMO. Ill just stick to keeping my optical drive and hard drive I think.

Yep, that's a familiar site! You almost want to replace the cover with gorilla glass.
