Here is the deal....I have a friend and he and his partner are putting together a new site for their company. One of the features of this new site will be selling stock photography. They have asked me if I would contribute to it and asked me what kind of fees I want to charge for the stock photos. To be honest, I don not have a clue how to answer this.

Here are my questions:

1) What are typical fees for something like this?

2) If I give them photos to sell how does that affect me selling/using those photos later?

3) I think the real reason they want my photos is because they tend to do a lot with the Real Estate market and I shoot RE full time. I assume I will need some type of release for them to use those....right?

4)Who do I get the release from, the agent that hired me or the person currently living in the home?

5)If the home hasn't sold, will I need a release from the new owner once it does sell?

This is all completely new to me so please forgive my ignorance. I just don't want to make a mistake.

#1 micro stock offers established rates - its an either or situation..RM you set rates etc..usage boundaries.

#2 easy.. ask for or demand a non exclusive agreement..if exclusive price goes way up!!

great topic great questions!! no answers??

1) What are typical fees for something like this?
I would think that you would want to be comepetitive so I would visit the website of the major players in the stock industry. Some have a wide range of pricing structures, depending on what your use and size are.

2) If I give them photos to sell how does that affect me selling/using those photos later?
You put in an agreement that allows for this. If they want exclusive rights to them then the price goes up.

3) I think the real reason they want my photos is because they tend to do a lot with the Real Estate market and I shoot RE full time. I assume I will need some type of release for them to use those....right?

I always find it interesting that people come to forums for information that they should be getting from professionals in the appropriate field. Your last three questions should be put to legal counsel, imo. Are you really going to go to the bank (so to speak) with information you gleaned off of a forum board where people can hide behind anonymity.

A startup business should be talking to accountant and/or lawyers to ensure that they have things done right.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Thank you for the responses thus far!

ssim- good points! This is what I need to know. This really isn't income I 'need', so if it is going to be a headache then I will just not use the RE photography. I am considering the participation more to help my buddy than myself. The last thing I need is headaches.
