Howdy,

I tried searching but couldn't find anything similar with what I'm trying to do. Will I be able to set up the 430EX II as master and 580EX II as slave using the 430EX II as fill light on camera?

Thanks!

the 430 ex ii cant be a master. you could try doing it the other way around.

No, the 430exII will not work as a master. The 580exII will master the 430 however.

Thanks for the quick response guys! The shoe on the 580 is loose when I mount it on camera and doesn't fire consistently. Off camera and remote, it works fine. Instead of paying to get it serviced, I wanted to see if I should just use the money on a 430 instead. Decisions decisions...

You could pick up an ST-E2, or a used canon 550ex or 580ex. Both of the older models can master the canon wireless system.

I've got a deal in place for a brand new 430EX II for $250 cash. If I went that route, I'd just need to pick up a 2nd receiver for my existing wireless system and probably just mount the 430EX II on another tripod and place it next to me for fill flash? Then again, it'd probably make more sense to just grab a cheaper Yongnuo if I went that route.

Yeah the primary reason to buy the canon flashes is for ettl work or to use in their wireless system. Otherwise lots more bang for the buck in aftermarket flashes.

But the flash foot spare part and replace it yourself, then, to save on that expense. Then you can use the 580 EX II as a master.

Or just fix the foot to the flash, if that's the issue. The 580 EX II has a metal foot, so it's not likely that it's worn out yet.

Speaking of Yongnuo, it just announced the YN-565EX flash, which promised the ETTL master capability. I think we can count on Yongnuo making it cheaper even than the 430EX II? It won't be widely available for a while though.

Fong products are evil in that regard. There are much better options.

Yes, I wish I did more research on it prior asking for it for Christmas. My friend swore by it and just took his word. I'll probably put it on craigslist and grab a lumiquest diffuser instead.

I think I loosened the the hotshoe when I left the flash on a tripod with the fong attached for a week.

Hmm... my 430EX II has randomly exhibited some of these symptoms (gross overexposure, losing contact with camera). Unlocking and reseating the flash quickly solves this. I miss shots though since I don't always CHIMP.

I may have to look into this if it continues or gets worse. Thanks for the link. ;)
