I'm trying to install Win7 64 on my Intel Q6600 PC, with the Asus P5Q SE/R. I've disconnected every USB device and hard drive, and plugged in my new formatted OWC SSD (did it in XP), but the install stops early on. It says "starting windows", shows graphics and things flying round, then shows a blue screen with a mouse cursor. It hangs there forever.

I have the system set to AHCI, though I tried IDE. I tried a standard SATA hard disk as well as the SSD. No change. My DVD drive is an IDE one, but works fine in XP. XP works well on the PC, rock solid.

My BIOS is 0906, i'm going to update to 1005 now.

Help! Any tips on how to get it working?

btw I may not reply to this thread immediately but i'll definitely be reading it.

Also, what's the easiest way to update the BIOS? It says it has to be done in MS-DOS mode.

It seems you are not alone in this problem - there are many forum posts explaining W7 install hangs with new SSD's.

How long did you let it hang for before restarting? Some people have reported up to 30 minutes of nothing happening before it continues installing! Try leaving it a little longer.

Also, try switching your SATA controller to AHCI mode too. This has worked for some.

Hope this helps,

Phil.

lol, I just re-read your OP and I see you tried the AHCI thing! Doh!

Success! Thanks again for the tip, I'll connect everything back up, install the extra ram, and dual boot until I have win 7 properly working :)
