If you are into these machines, I think it is super. Like the lighting and processing very much. You were lucky to have a great sky for a background.

I'm not into them really..But it was nice to change up what I was shooting!

Also nice to have something kinda raw with such a nice sky.

Thanks!

These halos are a problem ...

IMAGE: http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/9982/machine3.jpg

Suggestions ...
  • Convert to sRGB (for the web)
  • Tone down the hot spot in the sky
  • Correct white balance in the foreground
  • Bring out the machine a little more
  • Avoid the halos

In order to make this pop a bit more you need to address the following, it's serverly underexposed, blown sky, lighting is very flat and halos. Cropping would help it a bit too; the mud in the foreground left with those little patches of snow should go and theres a puddle right of the bucket that could be toned down. The entire right hand side of the photo is really dark with no detail and you could probably crop a lot of that out. Peano does amazing edits and I always love seeing his work on here, he did a good job on cleaning up the sky and making the machine stand out a bit more. Keep shooting and sharing and your pictures will evolve nicely.

Hi, what are halos and what causes them? In post #4 pic #1,are they the blurry edges on the edge of the metal? Thank you.

Yes, more like a glow around edges than a blurring of the edges.

I'm not sure which i like more..the subject 'popping' or more so blending with its surroundings? Either was i really like the composition, with a minor gripe being a little more space above the subject than below

On second thought, bringing out the orange/yellows of the subject does improve the photo (especially with the setting sun in the background)

Awesome! Thanks!

You know, it's funny, I was just comparing the saved file on my pc vs the version on flickr and I noticed it was really desaturated.

The machine still wasn't quite as bright as you made it. How did you go about doing that?

For toning down the hot spot in the sky, would you just use the burn tool with a very light brush over it?

I did this with a tip by Scott Kelby in his CS5 book. Opening as a smart object and then lowering the exposure on the 2nd layer, adding a mask, and then painting over the sky. This was super time consuming. Any tips on how to do that faster? I also think some of the halo's may have been a result of my being sloppy while painting over the mask.

That was because of the Adobe RGB profile embedded.

Curves applied selectively to the machine. Also a little painting on a blank layer in overlay mode (to enhance the orange).

No, I used this (external link) method.

Awesome. Thank you.

I read about the saving for web thing in the book but for some reason I never did it. Probably trying to learn too much at the same time!
