Results look pretty nice. I can easily see the detail in the gulls head.

Very well done Corey. Great position left to right in the composition, just open up your crop some to make the bird less cramped for space.

Is this scaled down at all? It looks nice and sharp, but to judge it truly, it would help to know if it's a full crop. Either way, not at all bad, especially for your first go at it!

From what I can tell from the EXIF, you were at the Bigma's full 500mm zoom, shooting at 1/1000, ISO 200 at f/8. Obviously, if you were able to hit ISO 200 and stop down to 8, light conditions were good---and it helped to have a bird who's very light colored! To get a detailed photo like this of, say, a Bald Eagle or something darker, you'd probably have needed to be wide open at ISO 400.

I'd like to see a full-crop (in the event that this one isn't). Mainly because it strikes me that 1/1000 is a bit slow for motion-freezing at 500mm, even for a relatively slow-moving bird. But I've seen it done before! :) Generally I keep my BIF shutter at 1/1600 or faster, and that's shooting at 400mm.

not scaled, i was shooting a few surfers at a local reef when i saw this seagaul flying near me, just kinda zoomed paned and grab the shutter release and held on haha, this was the sharpest one i could find. first attempt at BIF and only been using the 150-500 for a bout ten mins before hand, ive borrowed it off my mate to test before buying one, i wanted to compare it to my EF 300mm F4L with Canon 1.4x tc and my EF 400mm 5.6L

Then you did really well! :) No criticisms.

I had to download an EXIF viewer plugin for my Mozilla browser. (I think it's just called EXIF viewer.)
