So our local league had a game in a different venue this past weekend.
I have never seen a derby bout in such a brightly lit and clean facility! ha
the action was mostly shot at f/2, 85mm, 1/320, iso1600 and with no flash! craziness :)

here are just a few of my favs after quickly going through the bunch.
C&C always welcome. This was my first bout of the season. Too bad we won't ever be back here though..

1. the pack:

2. lead jammer:

3. and she's down, but still calling off the jam:

4. jammers battling it out:

They seem to be a bit overexposed, but I am on a work monitor.

I wish our team ever played with that kind of light! Nice.

Derby in daylight, what a pleasant change of pace. They look pretty darn good. Nice tight packs make for good derby shots.

I went to my first Derby Dolls event in San Diego this past Saturday; I actually found it pretty interesting once I figured out how it was played. Nice shots.

Nice shots. I've been to two here locally. I don't have the gear to shoot in our "arena", fun to watch though. My grade school skating parties were held in the same place...lol

Lucky you, getting lots of light.

Nice shots, with good action in the first shot.

yeah, total change of pace for us too! the ambiance was definately not as much fun though, it was too bright and clean! :)

What, if any, is the point of roller derby? I know something about many sports, but this is not a sport with which I am familiar.

Thanks.

yeah, our girls practice in just a skate rink and its impossible to shoot there without adding your own light (or panning with nightvision).

i'm probably not the best at explaining this, but basically speaking:
there is a jammer from each team. they score point by passing their opponents.
the other team members act as both offense and defense by trying to block the opposing team's jammer while getting their jammer through "the pack".

each jam last up 2 minutes then the teams switch players and jam again.
the jammers start behind the pack and start skating on a second whistle.

Good stuff Mitch! You're right...shooting in light like that is a dream!

One thing I have to mention, because I run into this a lot with my pictures of derby:

I mostly use the reference points of the vertical lines of the background to straighten the pics. I catch myself leaning with the direction of the skaters as I pan... which makes me chuckle when I realize I'm getting into the action that much. Sometimes it's not possible though, and then I'll use the horizon of the track or just guesstimate to where it doesn't mess with my internal equilibrium when I'm looking at the photos.

I am guilty of not straightening one bout due to being up at 2am and having just finished the first bout of a double header. :( I should probably go back and edit them since I'm mentioning it to you.
