Crazy story behind this one. I was on the side of the road with fifteen other people when a black bear came down the slope. What this brownish black bear didn't know whas that on the other side of the vegetation the huge chocolate black bear known as "chocolate thunder" was approaching. When the smaller bear crossed the vegetation, it immediately stopped and put its ears back. And then Chocolate Thunder charged the smaller bear.

Downhill.

Towards the people.

The Ranger shouted "get in your cars! Get in your cars now damn it!", I mean she was screeching it. The problem was my car was 100 yards away and I'd have to cross what was shaping up to be the bear's path. The car I was standing next to was locked, so I got on the roof. As the smaller bear reached the road, it stood on hind legs, huffed, and looks both ways, and crossed five feet from me at the rear of the car. It did not stop, but it was not happy. At that point Chocolate Thunder reached the road, stood on hind legs and huffed while checking for traffic. And then it looked right at me, and slowly walked towards me while I stood on the car. It came within four feet, huffed twice, then tore into the woods after the smaller bear. I don't blame the bear for being upset, but what was really making it crazy was the constant shrieks of the ranger. Every time she shrieked the bear looked around nervously and huffed.

I've never been caught in the middle of a bear fight. There's a first time for everything. I wish I had my video cam on me, but you can bet I stopped taking photos after the first bear. This is the "smaller" bear as it approached the road:

Great story and pics. Did you have to change your underwear? I think I probably would of had to.

Great photos! "Looking to cross the river" looks more like "figuring out how to get that photographer" though :D

Crazy story, but you got some great photos. I doubt you'll need them to remember the experience, but it doesn't hurt :-)

ME TOO! Clean underwear would be needed. Your shots are terrific!
