Was this with a commercial diode photographic light source? What was the distance of light-to-subject?

I note that the shot was 1/60 f/2 ISO1600, which is the reason for my curiosity about the above questions.

1/60, f/2 @ ISO 1600.. I'm confused as well, that must've been a pretty weak light? Don't get me wrong, it's a nice photo, I'm just not understanding what the benefit of this was..? Color temperature? It looks like this could've been done under ambient with the same results..

Pitch black dark room before my little one went to bed last night.

This light is capable of blinding you with 7Watt output. A tad less $$$ than the Litepanel pro. You can feather/paint light and also use if for rim light if you like.

The beauty of this little light is that its held in the hand if you like and you can mimic ambient light. Now I'm looking into kino flo for larger full body shots but I'm just a hobbyist playing. I'll use Einsteins for normal shots.

Ah, ok.. A pitch black room makes it mean more.. :) I thought maybe it was one of those key-chain LED lights or something you used for a bit of a fill..

So it could have been made much brighter then? I think a standard 580EX could've thrown out enough light to easily get you to 1/60 - f8 @ ISO 100.. considering you were at 35mm, you had to be within 4-5 feet, right?

Not trying to argue or anything, I just don't know much about the diodes..! :)

Yes, nice shot, but I am wondering about the practicalities of what was used!

Wilt its a video light. I'll chime in later...gotta run.

I am wanting natural ambient shots by artificial means.

So what accounted for the need for ISO 1600 in order to make 1/60 available (with the lens at f/2 for shallow DOF)?

I just measured a 75W-equivalent CFL, at ISO 400 I get 1/125 f/2 at a distance of 4'...so what advantage would the LED light provide, over a simple CFL in a desklamp?

I was incorrect.

I am only getting f/1.8 at 1/125, ISO 400 @ 4 feet.

The advantage is that it takes 5 AA batteries or can take an ac/dc adapter between 5.8 to 16.8V. The light is 5600K. I guess I can light this thing all day long with a Vagabond mini lithium.

The main advantage is that it can dim to extremely low levels so you can feather light and use High ISO to create extremely soft light without blinding the subject. The light can be piggybacked so it can clip on to increase light output.

I'm really thinking kino flo lights is a wonderful option for soft natural light transition instead of my studio strobes. My experimentation with these LED lights have been very good for such a small light source.

Be sure to tell your wife this the next time you go into the baby's room with your camera.

I guess you could also take a picture of your baby with the light from an acetylene torch if you wanted... just because you can is not always a good enough reason.

Thanks for description of the product, Alan. When AA battery powered, what is claim for battery life?

Wilt, I'm sorry I'm not having a good time describing things. Kino flo is a system I want to buy in the future . Its not the product I used on this photo.

Wilt the digital video light I used is made in China - not suprised :)
The company is called F&V (model number HDV-Z96). Speced at 800Lx. My light takes 5 AA batteries so less wattage than a litepanel Micro pro. The construction of this light is quite nice to be honest. People say aprox 1.5 hrs on a set of batteries. Some say alot more. Locally a TV station uses these lights and daisy chains them for professional application.

It has a less power than the 6 AA battery version from Litepanel Micro pro ($369). Please mind you there are better reviews from the F&V video light I bought for $129 bucks (can be purchased cheaper on ebay).

This unit is small so you can bounce off a reflector or feather light using this continuous light.

I will post 2 examples of natural light and instant soft fill. I'm LOVING this new simple setup both for fill or main light in certain situations.
