downgrading?

sooo.. in the past couple of weeks i have been thinking about a 5D for no reason, and I currently have a 7D.
would it be considered as "downgrading", if I ever decide to change from 7D to 5D? both are an amazing camera.
I just don't know if I can make the right move. As for the 7D, I don't do sports/birding, but I love the video. As for the 5D, I love the IQ, FF, and I don't know if its better than the 7D. I've been wanting to go FF because I hate 1.6crop.
5D2 is out of the question because either I can't afford it/ no money

Can you keep the 7D if you get the 5D, or do you need to sell it to get the 5D? I would say these cameras are two different tools there are times you would want the one and times you will want the other.

Most would consider it an upgrade for pure IQ purposes. Just keep in mind that EF-s lenses wouldn't work on it.

Who cares what its called, if you would prefer a 5D go for it but if you really like the video I would wait til the 5D3 comes out then pick up the 5d2. There are sure to be a lot of 5D2's for sale because this camera does not autofocus :-}

i don't mind about the EF-s lenses part either. its just that, is it worth the move?

Totally joking, but someone always chimes in to claim how bad the 5d's autofocus is.

Seriously, I do prefer full frame but mainly for the wide angle options. Considering your case both have pros and cons so your probably better off keeping the 7D.

It may be worth considering, since you like video but do not need the fast fps of the 7D to sell it for a T2i or 60D and put the money toward some lenses but I don't know how much $$ you would actually get back

Yeah the 5dc isn't the king of AF. I would keep the 7d and be satisfied. It's a great camera but the 7d with a 10-22 on it isn't to bad either.

Having made the switch from a 7D to a 5D, I think I can offer a little insight.

Both are amazing. I went with the 5D because I didn't use all the bells and whistles, much like yourself.

What I do miss from the 7D is the ability to MA, the auto WB, the viewfinder with the lcd overlay, the rear lcd screen, live view, the on/off switch at the top, the weather sealing, battery life, and just the general overall feel of it.

With that said, moving to the 5D was a great move that I don't regret. The IQ is just top notch. Everything just seems so organic with the images. Plus it put $600 in my pocket at the time.

It's the best value in getting into FF, hands down. Buy a Powershot if you need video.

Anyways, that's just my two cents.

oy this just made my decision alot harder. there are alot of things that i'll definitely miss about the 7D, but also money-wise what you gained back then is not possible now.

To make it even more harder - 5Dc doesn't have sensor auto-clean.

I don't have 7D, I went with 5Dc once I have enough money for it.
I never consider 7D just because it has more functions, even if used 7D is very close to 5Dc price.
My decision was based on 7D and 5Dc threads at this forum.
Pictures from 5Dc thread looks more pleasant for me (excluding my pictures )
IMHO.

What exactly are you looking for that you aren't getting with your 7D?

If stuck between the 5DC and 7D, and the lenses you have, I would stick with the 7D. It's the better all around camera with the exception of it being a 1.6x crop body.

I think you need to realize that full frame isn't "magic" -- it's just different and more flexible in some ways. You can get shallower depth of field with it at a given angle of view than you can with crop.

But the real question for you is: do you need that extra flexibility? Are you regularly hitting the depth of field limits on your 7D and simply need more?

A 5D won't give you any more angle of view coverage with your current lenses than your 7D will -- your 18-55 covers, on the wide end, the same range that your 28-105 will. You will lose on the telephoto side of things for sure. If you find yourself regularly going longer than 125mm with your 70-200 on your 7D then you will miss that ability with the 5D.

In terms of image quality, the tones of the 5D are smoother than those on the 7D at low ISOs, but the 7D retains more detail (you have to have a lens that's up to the task, though. Your 50 f/1.8 is, as is your 70-200 and probably some focal lengths on your 18-55).


I think in the end, you need to articulate exactly what you feel is missing in your 7D. What is it that it can't do that you believe a 5D can and that you really need? If you can't really answer that question, then stick with what you've got and learn to get the most out of it.
