I'm considering the purchase of an older 100 2.8 Macro, the non-USM version. I'm just curious if anyone has any idea about what its going for. I looked on ebay and did a search here but didnt find any recent sale to form an opinion.

If so, the difference is non-L, no IS, and - probably - a slightly lower build quality and no weather-sealing. I'm happy with the original; search the threads . . . No, there is an older non-USM version of that lens. Thats the one I want.

The lens does extend while focusing, and it can be rather slow to focus. One nice thing is that the front element is recessed, so it's like having a built in hood. I paid $399 for mine several years ago at my local camera shop. For macro the slower focus is kind of a non issue for me. Same for portraits. Not so good for action.
