I'm considering the purchase of an older 100 2.8 Macro, the non-USM version. I'm just curious if anyone has any idea about what its going for. I looked on ebay and did a search here but didnt find any recent sale to form an opinion.

As far as I'm aware, the non-L 100mm macro is USM. If that, in fact, what you're looking for?

If so, the difference is non-L, no IS, and - probably - a slightly lower build quality and no weather-sealing. I'm happy with the original; search the threads . . .

Anyways, Good question, I've seen them at KEH where they wanted $450 or so, I'd say its worth more like $300-350 used in a private sale depending on condition, Anything more than that and you can get the USM version instead

Thanks, looks like I'm going to get a pretty good deal then.

It's a nice lens. Built like a tank. The lens does extend while focusing, and it can be rather slow to focus. One nice thing is that the front element is recessed, so it's like having a built in hood. I paid $399 for mine several years ago at my local camera shop. For macro the slower focus is kind of a non issue for me. Same for portraits. Not so good for action.

the ones i watch on ebay usually go for over $350...if you check out the completed listings they are usually a bit cheaper...but still a lot are selling close to $400...how much are you picking yours up for?
