fantastic image.... confuses me how there is well defined detail in the water and clouds though with a 30 second exposure... I'd have thought the water would appear smooth and the clouds smudged (from my own experience).

I think it's due to the lightning acting like a flash, giving it the momentary exposure.

For those wanting to do these shots that might not know how, I guess I should say what I did....

Set the exposure for 30 sec (manual mode)...I think I was around F8-9 or so, and I bumped my ISO to around 500 (not sure if the info is still attached or not).

I had to find a spot that had some activity in the clouds then I zoomed to 24mm on the 24-70 (you can use any lens), I of course had it on a tripod, then used one of the lights in the distance to lock focus.

After that I just pressed the shutter, waited 30 second, pressed, waited, etc.

Hope this helps :-)

Thanks for this ^^^ Amazing shots really!

The lightning acts as a "flash" in an otherwise completely dark shot.

This is true, and to make sure it does this and does not blow out the highlights, I underexposed it a few stops.

To do that all you have to do is get the correct reading for the scene (you will want 30 sec exposure so you will have to adjust your aperture and iso to get this correct), then adj those settings until it is showing that it is underexposed. Depending on how far away the strikes are, you may have to tweak this a little.

Wow amazing capture. Just curious how many shots did you take before getting this one? If you took enough you might have ended up with a neat time lapse.

I missed this...I think there is about 30 or so shots. I moved the camera a few times, so it would kill this idea. I got a couple other strikes, but this was the best by far.

Most of the strikes stayed in the clouds as the bands went over me so the shots I got were just of colored clouds (which some still look cool).
