As I do so many times in life I'm coming to POTN for some advice! I just recently got hired to be the Houston Astros summer photography intern, needless to say I could not be more excited. At this point in time I will be providing my own equipment. While my focus of work will be mainly on pre/post game activities I will be allowed to shoot in game action. I have some money saved up and am looking to make a big purchase, i have narrowed it down to these three items. I'll make a case for each one and would love to hear input back from ya'll.
Here is a list of my current gear:
Canon 40D
Canon 70-200f/4L
Sigma 100-300f/4 EX DG HSM
Canon 50f/1.4
Tokina 10-17 f/3.5
Canon 300 f/2.8L (non IS):
I have wanted this lens for quite sometime and have gathered enough money to possible buy a used non IS version. It is a professional quality lens and one that I view really as a business investment that I would keep around for awhile. Also many of the Astros games are at night and I just don't see the f/4's being fast enough.
Canon 1d MkIII:
My 40D has been great for me up til this point buy I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade. With the MkIV coming out there have been some phenomenal deals out there on used MkIII's. Which just a couple years ago was Canon top of the line. I love the high FPS and also quality of a full frame. I also view this as an investment to keep around for awhile. The 1d would also allow me to get quality image from a higher ISO.
Between these two it comes down to which is the better combo. A Canon 40D with a 300f/2.8? or a Canon 1dMkIII with a Sigma 100-300f/4? Now for the Macbook.
Macbook Pro: The computer I have now sucks and is falling apart. It's a Dell Inspiron 1526. It no longer charges batteries(must be plugged in to use), the keyboard does not work (I have to use an external USB keyboard), and it doesnt always start up first try... I love the idea of having a macbook pro especially at the relatively low cost of 1200. I love the screens on them and the speed/storage capabilities. This too I view as an investment which would provide a platform for me to do all my editing and archiving.
I hate making decisions but one's like this are fun! Any insight on this would be appreciated.
