As I do so many times in life I'm coming to POTN for some advice! I just recently got hired to be the Houston Astros summer photography intern, needless to say I could not be more excited. At this point in time I will be providing my own equipment. While my focus of work will be mainly on pre/post game activities I will be allowed to shoot in game action. I have some money saved up and am looking to make a big purchase, i have narrowed it down to these three items. I'll make a case for each one and would love to hear input back from ya'll.

Here is a list of my current gear:
Canon 40D
Canon 70-200f/4L
Sigma 100-300f/4 EX DG HSM
Canon 50f/1.4
Tokina 10-17 f/3.5

Canon 300 f/2.8L (non IS):
I have wanted this lens for quite sometime and have gathered enough money to possible buy a used non IS version. It is a professional quality lens and one that I view really as a business investment that I would keep around for awhile. Also many of the Astros games are at night and I just don't see the f/4's being fast enough.

Canon 1d MkIII:
My 40D has been great for me up til this point buy I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade. With the MkIV coming out there have been some phenomenal deals out there on used MkIII's. Which just a couple years ago was Canon top of the line. I love the high FPS and also quality of a full frame. I also view this as an investment to keep around for awhile. The 1d would also allow me to get quality image from a higher ISO.

Between these two it comes down to which is the better combo. A Canon 40D with a 300f/2.8? or a Canon 1dMkIII with a Sigma 100-300f/4? Now for the Macbook.

Macbook Pro: The computer I have now sucks and is falling apart. It's a Dell Inspiron 1526. It no longer charges batteries(must be plugged in to use), the keyboard does not work (I have to use an external USB keyboard), and it doesnt always start up first try... I love the idea of having a macbook pro especially at the relatively low cost of 1200. I love the screens on them and the speed/storage capabilities. This too I view as an investment which would provide a platform for me to do all my editing and archiving.

I hate making decisions but one's like this are fun! Any insight on this would be appreciated.

I'd upgrade the body. Higher ISO will also mean the f4's will get some breathing room in low light. 40d is capable enough, but the 1d is a lot better. The lens is also a good choice, if you opt for the lens, pickup a rebel or a 20d as a backup, you might need it. Laptop is pretty much the worst investment, format the one you have and buy a new battery. You're done. There's nothing your laptop can't do for a normal use. Furthermore, of all 3, it's the one that's going to lose value faster.
A compromise might be to sell the 40d and a couple os lenses, buy both the canon 300 and the 1d.

Thats kinda what I'm leaning towards. I really do need a computer but it can always wait. Thanks for the input.

Definitely an option, probably worth it too, Although that would leave me with nothing in between 50mm and 300mm. I just need to win the lotto!

Uh, I'd get the bloody computer

Your computer sounds in absolute dire straits man, it sounds on its damn deathbed...

Having a new body or lens is completely and utterly worthless if you do not have any computer to post process files on, Having a new reliable computer would be my number 1 priority right now

Also id spend a little more and get at least a 15" Macbook Pro over the 13", Also get a new one, Not a used one, the new Sandy Bridge i7s are pretty much the fastest processors out there

Also the 1D Mark III is NOT full frame, its an APS-H crop..
