Thanks. The snake was not poisonous and pretty small, but my son was standing by with a stick :)

Been a while since I posted in this thread. A couple shots tonight of a frog (or is it a toad?) waiting out the rain on the side of my house, using my 100mm 2.8 Macro. He was about 1.5" long, face no more than 5/8" wide I suppose:

With flash (1/200 sec, f/14, darkened a fair bit in DPP from the RAW):

IMAGE: http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab246/shinksma/Frogs%20toads%20reptiles/IMG_0980_1024.jpg

Without flash (1/200 sec, f/6.3):
IMAGE: http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab246/shinksma/Frogs%20toads%20reptiles/IMG_0982_1024.jpg

The flash brings out the wetness of the skin a lot more and allows a much greater DoF, but in the natural light shot you can see the reflection of the sun (behind clouds) and the silhouettes of palm trees in his left eye.

Both hand held, because the rain was looking to come down hard soon (not much time) and lightning was quite active (don't need a big metal tripod to help get me zapped!).

Canon Canon EOS REBEL T3i
Lens ID Canon EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II
Aperture 5.6
Exposure Time 1/10 (0.1 sec)
Focal Length 55.0 mm
Flash Off, Did not fire
Aperture Priority Mode

5.6 was probably the largest aperture available at 55mm, which was needed to get as much light as possible, it also created the very shallow DOF. I did use a tripod and my son as backup to fight of this terrifying snake who's head was about the size of the nail of a pinky finger:)

Finally took the tripod out with the 60mm macro. Amazing how shallow the depth of field is when only about 6" away. This little guy is about 3/8" long at best.

Great shots, guys!

This is the side of a quarter, sitting on the swivel of my flash:

I wish I would've been better prepared for this shot...my sons started chasing geese and I didn't have time to change my settings, it is a crappy, rainy day and I wasn't ready to shoot any speeding objects :(

First time out with my macro lens.. I need more practice! This is about the only bug shot that turned out ok.

The toad (frog?) was very cooperative and didn't move a bit even when I inched closer and closer to him.

Nice shots, Tom! Try bumping your F-stop to 11 or so, and increase your ISO & shutter (faster) a bit for more depth.

Exposure 0.002 sec (1/640)
Aperture f/4.0
Focal Length 90 mm
ISO Speed 100
Flash Off, Did not fire

Thanks Ace! I'll give that a try next time.
