I was at an event on Monday where there was a display of captive birds. I was considering upgrading to a new camera, but now I think the T3i is just fine for my needs.

Both were shot with the 400mm lens wide open at f/5.6 in order to blur the background on aperture priority and let the shutter speed fall where it may. The tripod really helps as well. I ended up working with some pretty harsh light as it approached noon but you sometimes take what you get.

I was goofing around with the creative filters in the camera, this is the miniature effect. only pp was to use smart fix in pse9 then save for web.

yes
take photo, push menu, go to 1st blue menu, go to creative filters, wait a moment ,then press set button, pick miniature effect then it's pretty straight forward
