Just a piece of plexiglass and Rainex

I was trying to do it on my living room table, without the Rainex or anything like that... Imagined using it would help, that's why I asked, thanks!

Beautiful shots Rosey!

Question.........speedlights? Necessary? not? Which one?

It depends on what you do, for indoor they are life savers. I really miss them sometimes, the in-built flash sure lacks a lot.

How does camera handle situation where 1/4000 shutter speed is not fast enough? It is still taking pictures though. Does it over expose or lower ISO below 100?

I couldn't imagine ever needing to shoot 1/4000. You can pretty much freeze a hummingbird's wings at 1/1000 or so, and they flap @ 55/second. If you mean the pic is still too bright shooting at 1/4000, you can always use filters, such as a Big Stopper.

Ace...........are you happy with the flash you have? Looking into getting one.

Ok....so does the 50mm take a while too focus? Does it do a focus before a shot deal? Does that make sense? Its like it wont just take a pic...it doesn't seem to want to focus. Is there something different with the way this one handles compared to the 18-55 or 55-200?

I have/love the 430exII. The 580exII was recently replaced with the 600ex-RT, so there are great deals on the 580exII, like Best Buy's $359.99. The 430exII is in the $250~$280 range, but if you look hard enough you can find one for $220 or so. If your lens is 'searching' too much, there my not be enough light.

Yes I find it searches in low light also. And I find I need to be in the right focussing range also ie I need to move further back from the subject usually.

Thanks Stilcrazy, Dutch and Lisa. The garden is just beautiful and I have heaps more flowers, but am being strong! Dutch - the lens hasn't been off the camera since I bought it about ten days ago!

Ace I know Canon had a few refurbished but now I can't remember which ones. Gonna go check it out. Is there something specific I should be getting? I know there is a vast price point on them.

RoseyThats exactly it. I usually tend to find that I wont focus and then I back up its better. It still does like a test shot that isn't a test shot to focus maybe? DO you know what I am talking about?

Because it's a fixed focal length we have to use our feet instead of twirling a ring for focus :-) Not sure what you mean about the test shot exactly, but I do know about what you mean about getting it to focus. It's a great lens though for the money. Very sharp.

If what you get is the same I had, there are some solutions. In low light my kit lens will also hunt for focus and sometimes not find it, and I can't get a shot... When that happens, you should try to put the focus point(s) over something that has some contrast, like you would rather point it at a person face than her plain black or white clothes.

As a last resort, point it at the edges of your subject, where it "meets" with the background, and the camera will focus on the closest one.

Yes look to focus on the high contrast areas - the two kits lens, and the nifty fifty all are inclined to need that. I find the Tamron 17 - 50 f/2.8 much better.

Thanks! WIll try that. I have noticed that for those indoor low light shots.
