Nice Heron, George, and creepy B&W Wolf, nice!

I haven't been going out too much lately, just sick of the bitter cold...it's really supposed to warm up mid-week! Managed a couple shots yesterday...

I have Gimp....is it easy to use? Suffering from computer overload. :)

I wouldn't say it's easy. As Rosey said, there is a steep learning curve. But if there is something in particular you want to do, YouTube it and someone will show you a step by step how-to. I use it probably 8% of the time but just from the YouTube videos I've watched I know my way around well enough that I can do what I want with relative ease.

I think the thing to remember with PP software is it relates well to free lance work: your options are cheap, quick and good - you get to pick two! :p

NIce Doves Ace :) Was that with your new lens???

Seth.....Gimp frightened me LOL I might have to take another look at it when my free trial of elements is up. Not sure if I am going to buy that or not. I like the easy settings with it. Can GImp open the raw files or do you have to use DPP with it?

And we've had only two nights above freezing......LOL.

My little sister and brother in law moved to Wisconson a couple years ago. Brother in law is trying to find work down here so they can move back where it's warm. I guess she has forgotten about the 100 degree days with a 100% humidity we have here in the summer.LOL

I use B&W filters, I have a 3 and 6 stop, combined with a CPL (1.5) stops, I can have anywhere between 3 stops and a bit over 10 stops. downside is that when using wide angle you might have some vignetting, but it gives me the freedom to combine the different values. An added advantage of this setup is that the 6 stop gives a 60 multiplier. for instance: an exposure needs 1/60 shutter without 6 ND will give you a 1 sec. with the 6 stop ND. 1 sec without, 1 minute with.. and so on.

The B&W filters go into a holder combined with an adapter ring on the lens?? So you can use in combination/multiples? I have a holder and adapter for my kit lens but the Tammy is larger, so I guess I just need another ring for the lens? I bought very cheap filters just to try so now want to upgrade.

Thanks

Yes there's a RAW converter for GIMP - can't remember the details. There's other free open source programmes also, that run on Linux ... I assume some would run Windows also but haven't tried them. Digikam is one - I'll try remember the other. I use Digikam in Linux and it's reasonable once you're used to it.

Yes heaps of tutorials on YouTube, and lots of written ones as well, which is what I tend to use, as not used to the mainly US accents on YouTube :-) GIMPLite tutorial are what I remember but it IS a wee while ago now.

I'm going to check out Digikam and another one, I think called Showfoto that both run in Linux, are completely free, as open source, and easier than GIMP. Both also have RAW converters in Linux also. Just not sure if there's Windows and mac versions, as most developers work in Linux for these programmes.

Digikam runs on Windows and mac - http://www.digikam.org/node/341 (external link) I personally found it easier in Linux and would recommend giving it a try :-)

Lisa - they are really cheap, and I don't know the brand, but I wouldn't recommend them as they giva a colour cast. I just wanted to try out the techniques to see if I could manage it, and I can to a limited degree, so now want to get decent ones for my new lens.

Re Digikam in Windows.

I've just been reading about it and apparently it's less stable in windows so Windows users might be better to stick with GIMP ....

Rosey,
I have the ones that you screw onto the lens, then you can screw the other filter on top of the first, and so on. You can use stepup rings to use the filters on different size lenses.
You cannot use smaller rings on larger lenses, without getting a lot of vignetting.
your tammy uses 67mm lenses. I love using them, it lets me use long exposure times, which gives great effects..
