I had some decent luck for a beginner with the 55-250 for my sons basketball. None were professional by any stretch of the imagination but some were definitely keepers. I just had to play with settings with the gym lights.

Not perfect but good enough for me

When taking shots like these, I have three granddaughters playing, I just crank the ISO up to 3200 and shoot. Plenty good for 4 x 6 scrapbook prints or posting on FB. I'm with Lisa on this one. Not looking for SI quality.

The best there ever was or ever will be. RIP.

Showing my ignorance - but who is it please?

And just so we can hopefully start a blues-rocker theme, here's one from the archive. Landmark from my home town, and my favorite shot of mine, the Hernando Desoto Bridge in Downtown Memphis:

Took my boys to the monster truck show at Ford Field Saturday, they love monster trucks lol. Just pretty minor exposure, contrast, and sharpness adjust on these with iPhoto, I was too lazy to go downstairs to use LR and PS :D

Sigma 10-20, man it was cold out! 10mm, 1/160, f/9, iso 800.

These were with the 55-250...1/250, f/5.6, iso 1600.

You people continue to post such great shots.

The horse shots made me realise I had never shot a horse - that I can remember. So took these very boring ones today. They did make me realise the value of the kit 55 - 250 in good light though. I think I pushed the iso a little to get the shutter down. All in all I'm aware - just shots though!! Also took a couple of sheep grazing on a harvested maize paddock. Not sure I've seen sheep in such circumstances before - but maybe I've never noticed. The light has been sh#t today - very grey, so doesn't show how dry it is. And the paddock where the horses are is irrigated daily.

is it just me, or do the sheep seem to be surreal, as though they are superimposed on the shot? Weird>

Nice shots everyone.
Rosey those horses are just waiting for the grass to break the surface so they can eat it. I'll bet the owners are spending lots of money on hay. And with the drought this year hay will be hard to find next year.

That paddock watered almost every day I think .... but even so it is dry.

Watering is just not the same as rain it's the same on the grass farm you can keep it alive but it just doesn't grow as good without rain. I am starting to worry about the weather around here this year we had a few good rains in January but not much since.

True - and I see in the local paper that we had some rain a week or two ago, but it wasn't enough to cause any growth. While it's a great season for the pip and stone fruit, and grapes- the farmers are sweating (pun not originally intended). It's good for the stone and pip fruit growers though as they've had a couple of crap years. So - as far as our region goes, there's a little balance there ..

But long term if water continues to be poor - then ... who knows what happens to what is local horticulture and agriculture etc

That old Honda 350 is a beast. My father had one and it was tough to keep the front tire on the ground when you wrapped the throttle. I used to love that bike.
