Since I haven't done much shooting I've just been lurking.
Everyone has such good photos.
@Ace. I particularly like "water 7" -- the shape and the dash of prism effects up top.
@Mikey. Very nice night shots!
@Roseyposey. Sooooo, how's the job and housing market in New Zealand. Beautiful country...

Here are a few newb shots.

The chess project inspired me however I found out I don't have the proper lens nor chessboard.

Is there anyway to salvage this photo? Or is it even worth trying due to the drab surroundings? I do have the raw image.

And we had some snow today.

Welcome aboard Rainman.
Nice shots everyone.
Ace now I am going to have to get me a Macro lens those shots are cool.

It's been a couple of windy, cloudy days here, but today was a little better.

Couple of Pelicans chasing a Tugboat down the Intercaostal Waterway eating fish.

3D Chess!!!! Man, that would be perfect, if you had a bit faster lens. Your two kit lenses might not be fast enough to get the shallow DOF (you need a large aperture 2.6 or faster) You could try with your kit lens 18-55, set to 18mm, aperture 3.5 and get as close as possible.

As to salvaging the pic.. Black and white conversion, and try to pull up the structure..

Welcome by the way!

Dutch

I like the creepy texture that came out in the sky there.

Thanks, I use that a lot when I do B&W tree images when the sky is pretty much white, I think it adds something to the photo.

Dutch, I had the settings close to that, so no luck. :(
Aperture: f/3.5
Focal Length: 21 mm

Ace, That's much better. I've been at a loss on where to start dabbling in pp. That will give me a specific goal to accomplish in Gimp. Thank you.

Thanks, here's what I did:
Converted it to B&W
Lightened the foreground and structure
HDR brushed the structure, high grass, and snow to make the path stand out more in the foreground
Slight blur to the background trees
Added a metallic texture to the sky
Added a slight vignette

Was afraid of that. 3.5 is not really fast.
Still, loving the 3D chess :)

Are you doing this stuff in Gimp? Sounds like you refer to specific settings. What ever they are, your pp on the BW shots is great!
