Another fabulous capture. Canon should hire you to sell that lens. ;) Keep up the amazing work!

Thank you, bluesydude ! 99% of the time, I have the 70-200 infront of my camera, but I am looking for a good macro lens now.

Another shot from yesterday...Everybody was walking with a camera, because the weather was very nice...

If you focus and recompose the focal plane changes. You have to focus and take the photo without moving. The focal plane is parallel to your sensor, so tilting your camera to recompose will change whatever is on the new focal plane to be in focus.

I just can't see recomposing making that much of a difference in this circumstance. My tripod was 1.5' tall, my rig was mounted up by a lens ring so the pivot point was ideal, and I only shifted left 2° on the pan to compose.

Are you saying that once you focus you cannot recompose even slightly? From your description, a horizontal recompose shouldn't alter the focus, right?

1) why recompose if you are trying to figure out if your lens focuses correctly?
2) example of where a shift would not work: your camera is pointed at a wall at a 45 degree angle. You focus, and shift. Either the shift will bring it slightly closer or farther from wall. In your case, if it wasn't lined up perfectly to begin with then any tiny shift would have changed the distance from the subject.

Edit:
I just went to your flickr and noticed you're using a 200mm lens. The depth of field is extremely narrow, adding in that you're shooting at F4. I put in this information into a depth of field calculator, estimating that the bird was 30ft away. That only gives 1ft of in focus area. So if you were physically closer AND you moved the camera the slighest bit, it's possible to 'soften' the focus of the bird because of the shallow depth of field.

Of course, just my opinion trying to figure out what's going on.

I see what you mean about why recompose if trying to track down a focus problem. The two photos were just examples from earlier in the day - not specifically taken for troubleshooting purposes but instead just pictures of the killdeer. I'll try to get some specific shots to see if I can get it to reproduce the problem.

From a month or two ago. I need to learn more about straightening lines and getting rid of CA in post processing.

I'm just a noob, but I think your lines are fine. The support on the left leans in, but so do the ones on the right...gives it good perspective if ya ask me.

I like the photo the way it is. Horizon is level, colors are pleasing, and I like the little bit of orange reflecting off the bridge.

Very nice shot. I like the highlights and contrast. Nothing wrong the lines IMHO!

Nice shots from everyone! Very inspiring stuff that makes me want to go out and get better.

Here are a couple from a hike I went on this evening.

My first birds in flight shot (I loved how each bird had their wings in a different position):

Another first (my first close up bird shot) of this beautiful Cardinal:

As always C&C welcome, I'm always looking to learn!

My apologies for so many pics, I had a good, fun day of shooting at my son's first day of baseball practice...I won't post tomorrow, I promise!
