According to Canon Rumors:

Below are the specs for the coming 5D Mark II replacement, the full name of the camera is currently unknown.
Will it be 5D Mark III or 5D X ?

Specs:

22mp
61pt AF
100% VF
3.2″ LCD
Dual CF/SD Card Slots
Price: Around $3500 USD

Announcement on February 27 or 28, 2012 (Depending where you are on earth)

Wow, I hadn't heard of that information before!!

Even though it isn't going to make much of a difference, I would like to see the sync speed go to a speed of 1/250th of a second

ISO of the 5DX (studio and landscape) will probably be lower than that of the 5DIII and cost closer to 4,000.

Even with the FPS on the X at 3.4 you could still use it for basic sports/action, surely. I used my 20D for a lot of action/sports shots and it worked very well.

sure but weddings / events would be so much more assuring / satisfying with a high ISO capable camera. Well whatever it may be, the 5Dii seems to be the last affordable FF camera out there. I hope it stays in the market alongside its successors for along enough time

I hope Canon also does a fourth FF (the long rumored 3d?) with the 18mp 1dx sensor, about 5 FPS, perhaps make it a little more video focused, no AA filter, no rolling shutter, focus peaking (though magic lantern implements that) clean hdmi out, headphone jack (looking at the photos it looks like there's a jack on the 5d3) and a lower price point, maybe sub $2k?

Canon could segment the lineup enough and still keep market share in tact, but use a few different bodies instead of a jack-of-all-trades like the 5d2. The 45mp body geared toward the big print landscape and studio shooters, the 22mp body as the all around FF body, and the 18mp body for the hybrid shooters and the 1dx for the action shooters and photojournalists.

There are gaps that Canon, Sony and Nikon aren't filling, perhaps sales numbers don't justify it, but with the convergence of ridiculously high quality video and stills, I think there's room for a few cameras to do very well. I bought my 5d2's to replace my 40d and a couple Sony HD video cameras and I know a lot of other shooters that bought the 5d2 and subsequent HD dslr's mostly for video. A sub $2k FF camera optimized for video (a la the GH2) that can still take amazing stills would crush everything out right now for the hybrid shooters.

At the rumored price of $3500 for the 5d3, I don't think I'll upgrade. I would love to have improved video capabilities, but I'll have to wait and see if its much of an upgrade to justify the difference between what a used 5d2 will sell for (probably about $1500 when the price drops to $1999 after the announcement) and buying the new model.
