The more expensive ones are older. The cheaper priced ones came out in 2008 and the ones you got came out in 2001. B&H photo only sells the newer ones.

I was just looking at these two sets yesterday. I'm going to get the ones for $144. Kenko only lists one extension tube set on their website (http://www.kenkoglobal.com/ (external link) and http://www.thkphoto.com/products/kenko/ (external link)), so I assume that both of the sets listed on Amazon are the same thing. They both have the exact same markings even though Amazon shows different model numbers. The less expensive listing has the same model number (AEXTUBEDGC) as B&H and Adorama.

Is there a difference or an improvement?

I don't think there's anything different about those two sets except for the price and who's selling them. The lower priced set is sold directly by Amazon and the higher priced set is from a different vendor (Kellards) selling through Amazon.

Find out what the return policy is if you want to save a few coins.

This is from the B&H website:

"This DG Extension Tube Set has upgraded "Gate-Array IC" circuitry to work better with digital SLRs and some of the digital SLR lenses*."

*Retains AF function when effective aperture stays at f/5.6 or brighter(f/8 or brighter on EOS 3, 1V & 1D cameras)

Don't know what the difference is, but the older ones weigh less then the newer ones and they have a different serial number as well.

Very good to know! Thank you so much.

I have both sets being delivered today and looks like I''ll be returning the older model set. Amazon was great about the whole thing. Since I had them shipped overnight, I couldn't cancel the first order and the first order I used a 75.00 gift certificate. So, they added another 75.00 to my account, and I was able to apply it towards the second order without them even having the 1st order returned yet.

I was thinking about buying some extension tubes with some Amazon gift cards as well. I found a cheaper set from Cowboy Studio, but couldn't get an answer about whether or not it worked with EF-S lenses, so I never ordered.

I ended up not making the purchase, but I did notice that the prices on Amazon have skyrocketed like all other camera products. $40 more expensive today than they were 3 weeks ago!

Both of those Amazon sets you linked are the same and are marked "For C/AF". I have this set. It is the older version and will work fine with your two EF lenses. It will not be possible to use with EF-S lenses.

The newer ones are marked "DG" and are compatible with both EF and EF-S lenses.

I don't know of any other differences between them. As far as I can tell the circuitry is just simple 1 to 1 connections between the camera and lens, and nothing more. I haven't had a Kenko tube apart... I have had a Canon tube apart and it's nothing more than straight connections. There isn't much difference between the Canon tubes and the Kenko, other than the sizes and the markings.

Either set allows full control of the aperture and AF.

It is possible that the sellers on Amazon are just using an old picture. You might order a "C/AF" and get a "DG". Actually I thought most of the old C/AF tubesets would have been sold out by now. It's been a few years since Kenko came out with the DG and stopped making the earler version.

The more expensive ones contain special low dispersion air. :P

As far as I know they are just a straight through connection and don't contain circuitry but I could be wrong.

I have the earlier set of Kenko extension tubes. As manufactured, EF-S lenses will not fit onto them. However, it is very easy to modify them so that EF-S lenses will fit.

Each of the original Kenko extension tubes has a thin plastic baffle that has to be opened up to a larger diameter so that the plastic extension on an EF-S lens can fit through the baffle. This modification can be done easily using an X-acto knife or a variety of other common shop tools. No disassembly is needed to make the modification. One simply needs to make sure the debris from the cutting is removed from the tubes so that it cannot get into the camera in use.
