Hi fellas,

I am looking to upgrade to a longer lens. Right now I am using a 70-200 F4L for mainly baseball shots and its okay but I end up having to crop a lot. I am looking to upgrade to a 400mm but I am a little bit overwhelmed on which to pursue. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank You!

what's your budget going to be?

there are a few options

canon 100-400L
sigma 50-500mmOS
canon 300f4IS with a 1.4 TC
canon 400mm f5.6
sigma 150-500mmOS

those are pretty much listed high to low price wise...or you could look at a faster 70-200mm, and a 2XTC

oh, and i see a bunch of dodgers pics on your flickr...so go giants! :)

Well you don't have many choices in that focal length. You can choose between the Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS, Canon 400mm f/5.6, Canon 400mm f/2.8L IS, Canon 400mm f/2.8L IS II and Canon 400mm f/4.0 DO IS.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Thank You fellas. -DreDaze We shall see who wins tonight!

So it looks like im split between the Canon 100-400 and the Canon 400 f.5.6

Does anyone have any sample shots using these? Or is one of them known to be better than the other?

Thanks!

Check out the lens sample archives... Find the lens and hundreds of photos from each to look through.

I just got my 400mm f/5.6 today, and I *LOVE* it... SO sharp... It does lack IS, but honestly even today with little or no sun, I had excellent results. I can't wait for some good light... It is sharper wide open than the 300mm f/2.8 IS I just rented this past week, no contest. And even though it does not have IS, it balances very well on my 7D and is not as bad as I thought... As long as you keep shutter speeds above 1/500 or 1/640 you will be fine!

You could look out for a Sigma 400mm f5.6 APO TeleMacro (available in HSM and non-HSM variety). These are said to be as good as the Canon 400mm 5.6 in terms of image quality but the drawbacks are you have to buy it second hand as they are no longer made and finding one which has been re-chipped (to allow all apertures to work on modern bodies instead of just wide open) is difficult as they are quite rare.

That said, if you do find one it will be less than half the price of the Canon. Here in the UK there have actually been quite a few non re-chipped examples for sale on ebay over the past few months and they tend to fetch around £175-250.

Hope this helps :)
