Just an FYI. What you did is against the rules. Mods will go a bit easier on the new guys.

OP - I would avoid the 380. Try and at least pick up a 430 or if you want, one of the Yunguno flashes from eBay.

The 380 has no swivel so you wont be able to bounce in vertical camera position.

Look at one of the ETTL capable YN flashes or a 430 EXII used.

The 380 was my first flash, it did me well for what it was, it did introduce me to lighting and help understand it, but it had it's limitations like mentioned earlier. I used it on my 40D at the time and it worked for me, please note it's a full manual flash and doesn't have ETTL. At the very least I would look at a 430 EXII instead.

Ive just found a review on the 380 and this bit says it is ETTL:)
Summary:
This flash when used on my Elan IIE surpassed my expectations. It generates great color balance indoors in bounced and non-bounced modes. It also does fill flash outdoors very nicely. Have only had perfectly exposed flash shots so far on about 10 rolls of film. If you're still using the built in flash on the Elan you are missing out.

Strengths: Guide Number ( relative to the built in flash) Bounce capability E-TTL Flash and accurate metering

Weaknesses: Slow recycle times on alkaline batteries

You mind explaining how I broke the rules?
Are you talking about Rule #4 Section 9?

I don't know what your issue is with me.
I posted a link that answered your question.
My next post was simply to find out what rule I supposedly broke.

Enjoy :)

Pick up a used 430EX or a 430EXII.

The manual controls, tilt & swivel are worth the extra price. Battery door is less flimsy than the 380EX as well.

The main upgrade on the 430EXII is the metal foot.

The 420EX is the swivel version of the 380EX and also a great option if you don't desire manual controls (which it sounds like the OP doesn't)

for reference:
220EX - small and no bounce or swivel, avoid
270EX - tiny bounce only flash
380EX - larger bounce only
420EX - same as 380EX but swivels, too
430EX - like 420EX but adds manual controls
550EX/580EX - pro level full features highest output flashes.
