I was wandering would it be good to trade my 7d for 1d mark 3 or IV. I shoot alot of indoor stuff and sports like hockey. Is thr iso that much better on these cameras. I also plan to get into weddings and studio work later. Would this be a dumb decision?

I can't awnsrer about the 1 series. I own a 7D and 60D. I shoot wedding, and the 7D with a fast 2.8 lens has never let me down in low light.:D:D

Well, if you look at the MkIV and 7D the only place the 7D comes out on top is price and size. I'd say even the MkIII tops the 7D except for price and size. How much of an improvement is subjective and whether the price warrants the improvement only you can answer. You will not be taking a step back in performance or quality though.

If your concern is ISO, the MKIII is pretty close to the 7D, therefore the MKIV or a 1DsIII.

From my experience the 1D3 has significantly better ISO performance than the 7D though this can be negated a little when down-rezzing the 7D file to match. I find the files from the 1D3 are more forgiving and can be pushed further in post processing. The 1D4 at the pixel level is slightly better again than the 1D3 - which is a nice step up when you consider the increased resolution. For my purposes (prints often A2+ in size) I'm comfortable shooting the 7D up to ISO800, the 1D3 to ISO1600 and the 1D4 to ISO3200. If you can really dial in your exposure then I'd be happy to push each one up one stop.

If you are in a position to do so, try a nikon d700. AF is great and low noise at the high ISO's. Not looking for a fued, but just offering an idea...

Rent one, try it, decide for yourself. If memory serves, 1D3 is 10MP and 1DIV is 16MP, so the latter is more comparable to 7D's 18MP.

I just prefer using a 1.6X crop, instead of 1.3X.... But I'm using in conjuction with a FF (5DII), and feel the 1.6X crop does more to leverage my lens kit. And the FF is pretty good at high ISOs, when needed.

For sports/action shooting, though... and using a single camera format... 1.3X 1D series is more likely the ultimate camera.

5D Mk1!
I have both the 1D4 and 5D Mk1 and in VERY low light the old 5D is actually better! I should state that this test was carried out in my living room, at night, so the conditions were really pretty silly.
The AF on any 1D camera (+the EOS 3) is pretty stunning, so is the 7D. If you have AF problems with a 7D it's probably technique or a duff lens - they are pretty damn good!

How are you finding the 7D limiting for what you shoot?

I shoot hockey at ISO 3200 and 6400 quite often and used the 7D quite a bit over the last year or so.
