EF 70-200mm f/4L v/s FD 80-200mm f/4L

Hi everyone!

This is my first post asking for opinions and views on a Canon FD lens. I have someone offerring me a Canon FD 80-200mm f/4L lens for the equivalent of US$ 350.

I would like to know from people who have used FD lenses and are using EF lenses now as to how this FD lens compares with the current EF lens.

I would be using an adapter without the focus confirm chip, and using the lens primarily for people photography, either street or candid, on my my one and only 550D.

Inviting opinions on the FD lens and also the advice on whether to go for it or not. Any and all kind of advice and suggestions are most welcome.

You cannot use the FD on your 550D without an adpater that has glass in it = not worth the bother. New vs old - apples and oranges.

Considering that I've seen 70-200F4's go for $500 or under on the buy sell forums here there is no way I would spend $350 on an FD lens that would have to be adapted. I havent used any FD zooms in a long time, but I dont remember any zooms from that era being as sharp as modern L zooms, adding an adapter on top couldnt make them any sharper. Pass.

I was under the impression that the adapter would be one without any glass element. I might have to check up as to what the current owner is using it with. He said that he had an adapter, but the adapter would not be included, as he needs it for his other lenses.

Look at my gear list and see if any Canon FD lenses are mentioned - nope.

FD lenses need to sit closer to the sensor/film plane than is possible with Canon EF mount. As a result, FD lenses used with mechanical FD-to-EF mount adapters would lose infinity focus without a corrective lens element that would rob image quality.

Not worth it. Buy a used 70-200 instead as the autofocus is highly useful in these lenses. Needing to use an adapter, zoom the lens, and then focus the lens isn't worth any savings you might see.
