Ok I'm not sure if this needs to be here or not. I happen to love George Hurrells style and was wondering if anyone can point me to a how to emulate his work or if anyone enjoys emulating someone else's style. Does this even count as photography?

Thoughts or suggestions? Oh BTW if this needs to be moved go right ahead.

Actually I am a fan of his and have stolen many ideas directly from him. Basically you have to learn how to figure out his lighiting and poses from the work he has out there. It's not much, to go on. I have a few of his books and a few old magazines to guess from. The one tough nut to crack is his use of LF cameras and lenses. They have a certain feel to them that really cannot be duped - even with PS. He used very hot lights and then burned very heavily to get the contrast ranges. He also used hand retouching to smotth skin too. His retoucher was excellent.

He used one hot light on the face one or two on the hair, One on the bust from behind and often two or three on the BG. Shot up the nose quite a bit, butterfly for some women, rembrandt for others. He wans't hugely into clamshell but did use it on occasion. Camera heights and angles were dependant on the usage of the image. Publicity stuff was often level, sex kitten was shot from up high, full and 3/4 from the floor. He used all manner of lenses depending on format too but most of them were fairly long in FL.

Good luck. LOL

Another thing to be aware of is that a lot of his work was on orthochromatic film, which was not sensitive to red, so red lipstick came out darker than usual.

Shoot in Raw mode and then you can juggle filtration comfortably during the conversion to monochrome stage (development).

Canon System: fullframe DSLRs, lenses. Tripods, Alien Bees.
Always learning and striving to make better photographs.
