I just got my new 2xIII to use with the 70-200II. did some test shots and was so impressed that I thought I'd try it stacked with my 1.4xII. to my surprise, the two didn't want to stack. (lens, 2x, 1.4x, camera). Has anyone successfully stacked a 1.4xII with a 2xIII? is the mount slightly different between these two where they are not compatible, or is there an issue with one of my teleconverters?

Thanks for any input!

You need to purchase one of the Kenko 1.4 extenders or possibly older Tamron TC`s :

1. Kenko 1.4 Pro300 DG or new DGX version.

2. Kenko 1.4 MC4 DGX

Regards, ;)

I can confirm that they don't stack. To join them together you need to put an extension tube between them, and then you lose infinity focus.

Canon made their TCs a certian way for a reason. So that you will not try to use it on the wrong lenses and so you will not try to stack them. Way too much talk on this forum lately about TCs and how wonderful they are. And about stacking them as well. Guess there are a lot of power hungry, poor people out there.

If you think there is too much talk about extenders then why not ignore those posts or ask the moderators to limit the number of posts about them. Keep a cool tool

I'm just after some prespective, that is all. People need to know when they are trying to beat the system and are perhaps doomed to failure before starting out.

It's the comment about poor people that I found offensive. There's enough gear snobbery as it is without comments like that. I do however understand that comments made in forums sometimes come across in a way that was not intended and that you probably did not wish to cause offense.

Sorry, I will never use the word poor again. I meant some other word. Hey , I am as poor as they get. If we had a contest here I'd win. Ask my CPA who I just visited 2 days ago.

Thanks all for the confirmation that there are no flaws in my equipment, and that the incompatibility is a design "feature". ;) Since I was not specicifically planning on stacking extenders, I don't think I will need to swap to a 3rd party 1.4x, but it is good to know that there are many good options.

Gasrocks, I'm not sure how combining equipment already in one's bag to experiment counts as trying to "beat the system" and makes the user "power hungry". I didn't buy the 2x specifically so I could have a 560mm f/8 (stacked with my 1.4x) I bought it for an autofocusing 140-400 f/5.6 with IS, which by most accounts can produce acceptable images at much less cost and weight than buying a 100-400 and carrying that along with my 70-200. Stacking teleconverters was only an experiment (partially to look at focal length differences) since I am considering a 500/4 for an upcoming trip. I'm fully aware that the IQ from stacked TCs would be marginal at best, and not comparable to the native IQ of a long prime, but I was interested in experimenting. (And it looks like you own 4 teleconverters yourself, so I see that you can recognize at least some value in the tc concept.)

I guess I was not doomed to failure because of trying to stack extenders, but in trying to stack CANON extenders. No biggie. ;)

Thanks again, everyone.

For Whatever it is worth, The 1.4x and the 2.0x extenders could only be stacked with an extension tube between. WHEN THE 1.4XII AND THE 2.0XII were designeded the 2.0xII was designed so that the two extenders can be used together without any extras... So its not always an attempt to 'beat the system' to use extenders together. In some situations they can produce acceptable results as well.

FYI, if you want to stack Canon converters, one of them has to be a 2x Mk II.

For any folks that just want to play around on nice bright days you can purchase 3 or 4 - 3rd party TC`s for the price of one of the Canon III versions that are primarily only meant to be used with the great whites anyway.
