Have used a self adhesive poly print and mounted it onto a 20mm board. Is it necessary to also laminate the front of the photo for protection or is this not necessary? Our concern is that without laminating the photo will eventually peel and also that, not being protected it will deteriorate from finger marks and cleaning.

Sorry, I haven't done any laminating. There was a recent discussion on it here, but I'm not sure where the thread is located.

Maybe you can find info in the thread showing down in the "Similar Threads" section at the bottom of this page, or by doing some forum "Advanced Search" functions, or trying to Google "photo laminanting"? It's not a common topic here:)!

Using "self adhesive poly print" I don't know, but bear in mind that there are dry-mounted images in libraries that have stuck to their matte boards quite grudgingly for the past 100 years :p.

Thanks for the replies, the "similar threads" yielded some good information and there are a couple of alternative ways of doing this that we will explore. Must say that the first way we tried, using self adhesive poly, then having to apply two sided adhesive tape to the board edges , then applying black tape over that to seal the cut lines, was a bit of a disaster. The various operations scratched the print, even leaving a protective cover over printed surface didn't help, the edge trimmer left substantial indents pressed into the photo, and the tape just didn't look right even though it was neatly applied.
The print went from looking great straight from the printer to looking like something you'd find for sale at a second hand flea market.
At least the only way is up and some of the other ideas found seem a lot better and less potentially damaging.
