Hi everyone,

I managed to take a photo of the night sky last night. Unfortunately, as I had builders in the house, I managed to misplace my continuous exposure taking cable, so I had to take the photos manually. It was also after 10pm when I took the photos. I think it could be due to it not being so cold that not many stars appeared as before. I would like some c&c.

DSS processed 13 frames out of 18 and they were ISO 1600 and 8 seconds long at 55mm. Light pollution was removed by using Iris's automatic settings. Cloud came in just a few minutes after the last photo was taken.

To get the blue blobs to appear better around the seven sisters, would I need to have longer exposures?

Thanks,

Naddie

G'day Naddie, maybe drop your ISO to loose the noise. Are you shooting in RAW? If you have long exposures, you would start to get star trails, unless you mount it on an Equatorial mount. Maybe time to experiment a little with longer exposures to see where the star trailing becomes really obvious and drop your ISO. I'm by no means an expert, but the noise would indicate to high an ISO setting and it also looks like you are getting a fair bit of light pollution. Not much help I know, but hopefully there is something that you can use.

I just had a look at your Flickr and the 25sec exposure has some great detail. Lots of those and stack :-)

Regards, Dutch

Hi Dutch, thanks for the comments. I always shoot in RAW, but since I have no way of tracking, I have been shooting at high ISO, hoping to counteract the noise with large amounts of lights and darks, while still getting as much light as possible. I have a lot of light pollution here, an example is shown in this thread: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=998104

My plan is over the summer when the nights are not dark, I hope to try and build some tracking device, probably a barndoor tracker. This way, I can reduce the ISO.
