How blemish free can your prints be?

Doing test prints on or new Epson 9890 pro and am wondering just how blemish free, ie no scratches etc, a print can realistically be under strong light. Our canvas prints are really good (epson canvas) but prints on kodak glossy poly poster show, under close examination in good light, lots of minor little scratches. They cannot be seen from a realistic viewing distance, but how to sell output to a fussy client who wants a 100% faultless print when viewed from only a foot or so away has us worried. Personally we have never looked at a print that closely and frankly don't know if this output is acceptable. A print from an old sheet of Epson A3 that we had was much better with minimal scratches and the kodak clearly has some mark patterns (minor but there) on the roll before going into the printer.
The roll was expensive since it's 100ft but we just don't know whether to persevere with it, try to return it or what.
Are fine marks acceptable in the real world of wide format printing as long as they are not visible from a realistic distance or not? Can any members with the same or equivalent printers clarify this for us or advise the best papers/canvas to put through?
