I'll be going to Germany in a couple of weeks, and will be taking my camera of course (50D). Does the charger need any special power adapters? I have a Targus power adapter if the brand makes any difference.

I'm drooling over the architectural opportunities...

Any advice is most appreciated.

Cheers.

i'm jealous! i was in Germany in 1998 and had an awesome time.

if you can get south to Berchtesgaden, go for it. Bavaria is breathtaking and the tour of the Salt Mine is kickass. would be great for some cave photos.

as for power adapters... here's an excerpt from wikipedia for Germany.

Type F ("Schuko", short for "Schutzkontakt") is standard. Type C Plugs are common, especially for low-power devices. Type C wall sockets are very uncommon, and exist only in very old installations.

they're also 230V @ 50Hz.

All my Canon chargers are multiple voltage and can be used almost anywhere in the world. You just need an adapter for the plug.

Thanks so much guys.

Altitude604: I'll be in the North (Leipzig area) visiting family, so will have to save the info for future trips :)

Cheers.

230V @ 50Hz indeed. It should say somewhere on your charger whether it works with that type of supply.

If you only need the adapter get that sort:

This one will work too but you do not need it for a camera battery charger:

Some larger stores in Germany stock the ungrounded sort but for obvious reasons usually rather sell the adapter that goes the other way round. They cost about 2 to 3 euro.

Most modern power supplies for PCs, chargers for camera bodies..etc will handle 110/220 at 50/60 Hz. Check the label to be sure. If so, you just need a plug adapter to latch the local receptacles. Not like the "good old days" when you needed step up/down transformers. ;)

Canon's chargers are rated 100-240 VAC 50-60 Hz, so the voltage is no issue. Just the physical shape of the plug.
Get an adapter for Western Europe, not Italy, Spain etc. The pins used in Southern Europe are thicker. And stay away from the UK/Ireland adapters...

Thanks everyone... I did check the voltage, not worried about that, and will make sure I have an adaptor rated for German plugs.

Cheers.

I live here in Germany and I have american specs canon and all you need is 220V adapter. One thing for sure though is if you are driving get a portable or if you renting get one with a GPS. Gas is very expensive here.

No I'm not a photographer, I just shoot with Canon DSLR with those lenses with red thingy...;)

FWIW, 'The Source' electronics store in Canada sells adapters that will allow you to mate the two prong North American plug to the European socket.
