Converting a Sigma SA lens to Canon EF mount

Dear people of potn

I've been looking for a nice lens with a bit more reach than my current 70-200, a 300 f/2.8?
well the sigma 300 f/2.8 is apparently considered pretty good, but even this lens is financially
out of my reach.

Untill, I read a topic about sigma SA lenses being cheaper than sigma EF lenses, and the
sigma af protocol being a direct copy....

*google's "sigma sa to canon ef"*

There aren't that many results to go on, but It is possible, the af protocol and flange
depth are exactly the same, so what I need then is

-300 f/2.8 sigma
-the mount for that lens for canon ef
-time and a sh*tload of luck I suppose...

Does anyone have the 300mm and think it would be worth it to convert it, and has
anyone done it before ?

I have a pretty rough looking 300mm on my scope going for 500$

Electronics are invloved - Sigma won't do it, you can't do it.

Have spoken to Sigma tech support, they can do it, but it can be expensive, I'll have to trace age and serial
number first, and than talk to them again, if anyone is interested, I'll keep you posted.

by the way, this is Dutch Sigma tech support, I don't know what the policy difference is bitween
sigma US and Sigma Benelux.

I have done that ~ a year ago with a cheap Sigma zoom lens, just for curiosity.
It was pretty easy, I think an hour of work. You have to solder a bit, but very basic.

But be aware, that older Sigma lenses with SA mount could as well have the protocol that will not work with newer EOS cameras - if you want to close the iris, it will give you an error.
