Returned T2i, What Next?

My t2i zoom button stopped working randomly, and the grip was not flush to the body like it should be. Since I was within the 45 day return window from the merchant, I sent it back.

I paid $909 for a t2i with 18-135 kit lens. Now, I learned a lot in the short time I had it, and am looking at what I should do with this refunded money. I used it 90% of the time in manual and would like to pursue photography as a "serious" hobby.

So the question is:

Should I upgrade to a 60D? This costs me $100 more dollars (for the body only)

OR

Should I buy the same kit elsewhere (sticking with a t2i or t3i)?

Effectively, I would lose the 18-135/3.5-5.6 and would shoot with just a 50/1.8. I'm going to pick up a 30/1.4 soon as well. If someone could suggest a good zoom lens that covers wide to medium telephoto (100ish?), I may think about that over the 30/1.4.

Thanks guys!

If you like the feel of the T2i, just buy it somewhere else. Go to bestbuys and hold a 60d to see how you like the controls as its a xxD body. By picking up a 30 1.4, you'll probably get similar results with either t2i or 60d.

The 60D has a few advantages over the T2i.

1. It has a swivel screen. For photos that doesn't mean squat, but for video it's a really big deal.

2. The 60D is much more rugged. Today I handed my wife the T2i, and then when she was taking pictures of me, the rocking chair in which I sat broke. She somehow attempted to save me, the camera, and my beer at the same time. She succeeded in two of those (I'll miss that beer).

3. Rebel sounds really lame. It's true. I wish they'd just stick to confusing numbers instead of "rebel." Maybe they should just call it the Infidel.

4. 6 frames per second (okay, I'm stretching it) for the 60D vs. 3 for the Rebel.

5. A hundred bucks isn't much.

I'm using the 28-135 on my T2i and am enjoying it a lot. Great combination.

Look:

Thank you. bw!

The $100 also means I'm sacrificing the 18-135mm. I guess, I'm looking for a good reason to not get the 60D.

I plan on walking around cities/traveling a lot which made the 60D appealing. I could handle the T2i in these situations as well (I think).

T3i is an option as well…

The 7D and 60D are comparable in many ways?

Are we likely to see rebates on the 60D again soon? (Just ended on 3/19)

Get the 7d. If you don't, and you spend any time on these forums, you will probably wish you did in the long run. I started with a T2i like you and quickly learned it and spent most of my time in manual mode. I debated long and hard about whether to get the 60d or skip to the 7d, and after reading many threads about it decided the 7d was the way to go and I am so glad I did. I know it's more money than you want to spend right now, but it's worth it to get it right, right now, while you are still at square one as far as money is concerned.

IQ wise you won't see any difference, if it is going to cost you a net of $100, I would get the 60D, more FPS, better feel, slightly better focus system...that being said, also, feel, you need to go handle both,,,I came from a Xsi, and even though the 60D was Technically probably better, I went for a 50D, personal preference....

Hmmm... I'm still trying to find the zoom button on my T2i. Didn't even know it had one. What grip were you using?

It's your AF selection button/zoom button for previewing pics.

I think the 7D is just too much for me. I also like the swivel screen for some reason.

This ++

if you are serious, the AF of the 7D is the way to go. More cross type sensors give the edge over the 60D or t2i/t3i in low light.

I have a bad back and wanted a setup that would allow me to use one lens while traveling and walking around. I think the T3i with the 18-135 will give me enough range and work well for me. The 60D body is larger and 32% heavier than the T3i.
