Ok, so I've always used RRS L-Plates on my cameras, and even have one currently for my 7D, to go with my BH-40LR ball-head and tripod.

However, I am gearing up to use my 7D for video as well, and am really interested in getting a Zacuto Z-Finder Pro (which comes with the gorilla plate). This poses a problem for mounting my camera on the tripod, as the tripod plate needs to be on the bottom of the camera.

The RRS plates (as well as many from Kirk, etc.), are form fitting to the bottom of the camera, meaning that they have curved surfaces that project above the flat bottom of the camera. In order to mount to the bottom of the Gorilla plate, they need to be flat on top, which would allow me to switch between using everything hand-held, to tripod mounted, without having to remove a plate, and install the other.

Has anyone come up with a solution for this? This was the only thing I could find (in the higher quality range): http://www.bhphotovideo.com …ails&Q=&sku=391058&is=REG (external link)

It would replace my L-Plate, and while I lose one mounting method (vertical), at least I can still get the camera on the tripod, and of course, I can always use one of the slots in the ball head, to turn the camera vertical.

What do you all think?

Secondly, would this block the connection of a video rig, if I had this installed on the bottom of the Gorilla plate (the place where the rod goes in)?

Hejnar makes pretty good stuff. Actually I feel like I'm going overboard linking to them in the last couple days, I just got a couple new pieces in and was reminded how nice it is. I haven't use the exact one you linked to for comparison, but I like this one. It's made to a pretty tight tolerance and is well-machined, not just your typical generic ebay plates.
He also has longer plates without a ridge if you want the extra length and don't care about bi-directional.

I don't know about your gorilla plate, but these are handy to have as a generic plate for other smaller cameras, or a flash stand, or anything that I might want to mount to a tripod at some point but don't want to buy a dedicated plate for.

Wow, thank you both for the options. I like them both, in fact, I wish I could combine the rubber inserts of the longer one, into the shorter one.

I like the short one from Hejnar the best, because it has a slot going the length of the plate, versus the Promedia Gear one that has it going the width. After closer inspection of the gorilla plate, it offsets in the length direction, so having a screw mount slot that is in the length direction, will enable me to try and re-center the middle of the quick release plate, near the center of the lens.

Of course, both of these options are cheaper than the one I found, and look to still be high quality. Thanks for the suggestions!
