Check out Matthew Coughlin's photostream (external link) to see what can be done outside, with both softboxes and bare strobes!

Thanks. What about the smaller inflatable softboxes? Are they useful outside for fill light?

I use the 47" octabox on an Alien Bees B1600 outdoors all the time.

Either softbox or BD.. Rarely umbrella / PLM.. They act way too much like kites. :)

One of the hong kong novelty companies makes a 6x7 inch balloon device that acts like softbox (sort of). Further proof that PT Barnum was right.

What size would be good? Or maybe just use a reflector?

I use cheap umbrella style softbox's. they are cheap so when the wind blows them over it doesn't cost much to replace, they set up as fast as you can open the unbrella and put the handle into the lightstand. the light from them looks good.
I think the 42" one is about $35.

How close do you put it to the subject?

As close as I can get it and still frame the photo properly, the closer it is the softer the light.

Aren't there non-inflatable softboxes that fit on a flash? Are they useless as well (I have no idea and don't want to waste money)?
