emailed them earlier today and they asked me to call them...will give them a ring tomorrow. Where did the info about them being OOS come from?

A member pmed me and asked how and where i got the lens for $615 and i told him whom to personally ask for in the sales dept. at 47stPhoto. He did and he replied back to me with that info from the sales rep.

There probably getting so many calls they are trying to round-up some more copys from other vendors and split a little profit !

Either that or they want to try and sell you a 500/f4 IS ! :p

Regards, ;)

I got mine from Adorama at a list price ($669), the 47thstreet were out of stock (and their price back then was $629 so the $40 diff wasn't worth the wait, plus I'd expect Adorama to be less headache if I had to return or exchange it).

So far it seems to be on par with Tamron 17-50 non-VC that I own, in terms of IQ. It's faster focusing and OS does help especially when shooting videos. My only two complaints are the hood - it is not as easy to put on as Tamron's and I've already dropped mine a few times thinking it was solidly attached to the lens while it wasn't - and the lens cap. It was cheap, tinky, wouldn't securely snap to the lens at all, and I just lost it - fell straight off the camera. I am carrying the camera in the backpack with hood attached (after making sure it was indeed solid), and once I come back from the trip I am going to order a replacement from HVStar.

Here are two photos. The portrait is JPEG straight out of camera, at Standard pic style, completely unprocessed otherwise (as I said I am on vacation and all I have with me is a small netbook with Picasa and Irfanview). Shot at 1/250 f/5. The flowers were shot wide open at f/2.8, high shutter speed. On this one I had a slight levels adjustment done. Neither photo was sharpened, actually there was probably some loss of sharpness due to resizing.

Thank you for the info Silverfox1! Kinda happy they're OOS as I just got another lens this week and having to figure out two new lenses at once is a bit overwhelming.

Silverfox1 those Beringer shots are lovely and sharp, how does your Sigma @ 50mm f/2.8 compare to your old Canon 17-55?

If you glance at the below test graphs that Lenstips performed this lens performs pretty darn good at 50/f2.8 and is essentially on par with my past copy of the 17-55.

IQ is close enough that given the price difference of almost $600 bucks, IMO surely dont warrant the Canon unless you cant live without FTM.

Dont get me wrong i think Canon produces some fine lenses but unless they start releasing some competitive alternatives soon, Sigma will continue to garner a substantial lion share of the market with a variety of their soon to be released FL range EX lenses.

The only real winner again IMO that Canon has recently released is the stellar 70-200 MKII and it carrys a high price tag in any economical environment let alone the present times.

The lens tests out very sharp, but I wonder whether it will show front focus. It does this in the lenstip review and in others.
My crop cameras do not have microadjust, and that makes me hesitate about this lens.

I have not seen nor heard of any front or rear focus issues with this Sigma zoom. Now the Sigma 30/f1.4 & 50/f1.4 primes is another scenario.

You can see the battery focus test i performed on the 1st page of this thread.
