As I lost my 430 EX II, I was planning to buy a new one. But I would also like to use it off shoe sometimes. As the 5d mark II can not control the flash off shoe, would it be better to buy a 580 EX II right away? What can the 580 EX II do that the 430 EX II cant? besides being a master?

Cheers!

For off shoe flash a radio trigger is a lot useful and if you avoid the authomatism you can find even cheap solution.

Here is a list of the main features and qualities Canon 580EX II has and 430EX does not:

•More power output (58 meter vs. 43 meters)
•Wireless master mode
•White reflector card (catchlight card)
•Weather sealing (battery compartment, shoe mount, body and head, connectors)
•Superior controls (select dial, newer buttons design, better on/off switch)
•External metering sensor
•External battery pack connector
•PC connector
•Head turns 180 degrees to the right (430EX II does only 90 degrees)
•Head tilts 7 degrees down (430EX II does not go down at all)
•Six extra custom functions

ALSO.....

Another interesting mode available on the Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash is Multi Mode - or Stroboscopic flash. In this mode, the 580EX II fires a rapid series of flashes as setup in the menu. Unleash your creativity with this one.

AF focus assist cover 45points. (430EX II only covers 9)
Flash exposure bracketing (FEB)
Rapid-fire mode
"Save Energy" override control
