too many camera choices HELP !!!!!!!!!

I am currently looking into buying a good digital camera. I am so overwhelmed with all the options...could someone reccommend me a few good choices. I know that I want a Canon for sure but there are still so many canon's out there....

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Maybe you could help us out a bit:

Do you want to point and shoot, or do you want to work with your images in Photoshop?

Do you intend on buying lenses to suit the type of photography you are interested in, or do you want a camera with a "do everything" lens?

What is your budget?

Do you want something small, or relatively small ... or are you ok with carrying around a DSLR and associated gear?

I want a point and shoot... I dont' really have a budget...I have over a thousand saved !! I would like a camera with an everything lense !!

I am just an amateur ! Just starting out

So, if you have $1000 for your equipment I would go with one of the following:

Powershot G6 ($530)

For me, out of the above I would go with the Lumix FZ30 ... but I'm certain you would also be happy with the Canon's.

Here is a kit that you could get:

Lumix FZ30, 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II card, card reader, camera bag = $775

If you get a spare battery and a flash the total will be almost exactly $1000.

I need to mention that one of your original posts said "point and shoot". A G6, which I just bought, can certainly do point and shoot, but it's considered an enthusiast camera, meaning that it is below a SLR with interchangable lenses, but above a true point and shoot.

I've been tempted to add a camera and have been looking at Canon Digital Elph S500 which is truly a pocket camera.

Take your $1,000, spend $400 on a digital like the S500, work with digital images for awhile to get used to digital vs. film and then, if you want to progress to more, spend $500 and get a camera like a G6 or other Powershot.

And with the 2 cameras you have one that you can throw in a pocket or purse that will produce spectacular images and one that you will have to carry on a strap or in a carrier where you have much more control over the variables for the pictures you take.

I would go with the G6, I have the G3 and love it even though I use it as a back to my 10D, you can get add on lenses and filters for the G6 as well as the Canon external flashes.

Just curious, but why would you pick the G6 over the Lumix FZ30? I don't own either, but from reviews, tech data and looking at some images the Lumix sure seems to be a fine camera for a "p&s".

The G6 is definitely no sluch either

Only because I've always been a Canon owner, that and take a look at what the majority of all the pros i.e newsmedia, magazine photographers like National Geographic use and you will see primarly Canon or Nikon. there has to be a reason why they stake there lively hood on these two brands. My guess reliablity and quality. Nothing against the Lumix, I don't know that much about it. That and I tend to stick to companies that have always been camera makers, may be stupid but just my opinion.

I can see your point, and I respect it. Heck, I don't even own a P&S, but have just been shopping around a bit looking for something to take on vacations when I don't want to lug my DSLR/SLR equipment.

Panasonic does seem to have got it "mostly" right for this point and shoot though, and provides it with a very nice Leica 12X optical zoom with IS. From what I have read, the only problem with the camera is that there is too much noise. The ultimate P&S though would have been a Lumix FZ30ish camera using a Sony 7MP CCD or a Canon sensor.

There is aways the soon to be released Sony DSC R1 w/ APS-c size cmos sensor and Zeiss optics, though not exactly pocket sized.

Another point is if you want a Leica, buy a Leica. Sort of like the old El Camino adage nice looking vehicle, but made a lousy car and a lousy truck.
