I don't know if this has been done before, but how about a thread relating to historical milestones in photography.. It could open up some great discussion and be a valuable learning tool..

Note : This is not a timeline but please try to keep your posts factual..

OK,, I'll start with a couple..

In 1954 Kodak releases Tri-X in roll film form, 35mm and 120..

In 1980 Nikon introduces the "red stripe" for the first time on their Nikon F3. The red stripe was the signature of designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.

we are living the milestones right now. Digital, decline of professional careers, cell phone cameras, online streaming video and Utube, traffic and sidewalk cams, facial identification software, digital cams like the hubble in space and google earth streetview and a hundred more things that are going to happen in what will probably come to be known as the dawn of modern imaging or something like that. Today is a milestone, tomorrow is another. we have hit the steep part of this curve and are climbing so fast we can't even measure the advances by old standards of measurement anymore. It took years to get from emulsions on glass to emulsions on film to polaroids to digital. look how fast we went from sub megapixel to what now? 24.5? see, I can't keep up anymore.

Henry (William) Fox Talbots invention of the calotype process is a fundamental milestone. This process gave photographic imaging permanence, where previous experiment images had continued to expose until fading away.

George Eastman inventing roll film and making photography cheaply available to all. A box with a hole and a shutter button. When the film is used mail it all back and Kodak will develop the film and put a new one into the camera. The first point and shoot.

The invention of the CCD (for which the inventor was recently awarded a nobel prize). Digital technology transitioned photography away from 150 years of film use and into the computer age.

John.

Surprised no one's mentioned the very beginning: 1826, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce creates the first photograph (external link).
