Yeah, that's it, you nailed it... Prices across the board go up, but nobody wants to raise any taxes to pay for the expenses, so what are they supposed to do exactly?

Also, let's see, do we tie up the crime unit for an online sale that has gone south, or try to solve the different homicides, home invasions, etc? I know where I want them to concentrate their efforts.

Please give a little more respect for the folks that are putting their lives in jeopardy each day.

Thanks for saying that. I have friends and family that are leos. Most of the time, all I hear are people bashing on the leos, only a handful of compliments.

As for the op, glad you got your stuff back. I had my car stolen before, and I still think thieves should be castrated. Cruel and unusual? Not in the least, they took something away that is of value to me...an eye for an eye.

I finally got a few friends together and headed to San Marcos as Texas allows for the reasonable use of force to recover ones stolen property. About halfway down I called the San Marcos PD and declared my intentions. They suddenly were willing to send an officer to check the bike.

Didn't OJ Simpson try something like this in Vegas a while back? Glad it worked out better for you than it did for him! I love Texas!!!

He broke into an apartment with several guys, wearing ski masks and carrying handguns... to steal memorabilia which had been legally sold. Different situations if you ask me.

Heyiwantyourhelp sorry about your troubles.

Sloanbj I could not agree more

BroncoAZ the cops in AZ are some of the worst IMO. I could bore you with a ton of stories of those clowns.

Offcamber sorry you went through that but I bet justice was sweet! Congrats!

Camera Insurance thru State Farm called Personal Articles Policy, PAP

The cost of the policy is:

$1.49 per $100.00 for Non-Professional

$2.16 per $100.00 for Professional

That is with a Zero deductible. It covers anything that happens to your gear no matter who, what, when, why or how.

They dont do it anymore.

I just got a PA policy through State Farm about a month ago, I live in Virginia.

Somewhere around $6,800 worth of gear for $100/year and no deductible.

the next step should be me contact ebay and tell them the item had been verified and hopefully they would issue a refund.

Why would you contact eBay? You weren't involved in the transaction. Your friend is the one who has to contact eBay, and he has to provide info from the police dept. that shows the items were stolen goods. The detective may even have to contact eBay directly.

There is nothing that you personally could tell eBay that would make them take any action in this case.

Still seems odd that the OP registered to report equipment stolen, then asked that one thread to be removed, then opens up a successor thread. I am trying to figure out what motive is, considering the POTN community had no part of this, and details won't be divulged, etc. ??? It will have no bearing on any investigation at this point, if the OP has serial numbers, and a police report, and they can find the perp, then whatever is posted here should have no impact.

Plus it appears there is no intent on being a long term POTN member, the account appears to have been created just for this event, given the screen name. :(

Curious, isn't it?

Cotton States offers insurance at a decent rate. I have had one claim, with no problems.

Yeah, that's it, you nailed it... Prices across the board go up, but nobody wants to raise any taxes to pay for the expenses, so what are they supposed to do exactly?

Taxes are generally proportional to some combination of income, which is essentially proportional to prices (it lags some, but otherwise where do you think the money goes?), and to prices themselves (e.g., sales tax).

So in general there should be no need to actually raise taxes, which would mean raising the percentages, because that would mean that the cost of the service the state is providing is growing disproportionately.

Also, let's see, do we tie up the crime unit for an online sale that has gone south, or try to solve the different homicides, home invasions, etc? I know where I want them to concentrate their efforts.

This, on the other hand, is definitely right on.

Proper laws that would significantly increase the risk to the thief (and thus change the cost/benefit analysis), such as authorizing the use of force (perhaps even deadly force for at least some types of property) to protect property, would go a long way towards solving the problem, but many see that as being "too harsh" on the poor, helpless thieves.

One of the biggest misconceptions in criminal justice... think of the disproportionate percent of criminals doing the majority of all crimes. This idea only deters the people that wouldn't be committing crimes anyway (ie, you and me).

No, laws forbidding the actions deter nobody but the people that wouldn't be committing crimes anyway. The people who commit the crimes are not afraid of being punished by the state.

What deters people who tend to commit crimes is a risk to them so great that they have to be desperate or stupid to take that risk, such as the risk of incurring great bodily injury from the persons they seek to do harm to.

Areas where it's known that the law-abiding population is well armed tend not to have the same level of home invasions and other such crimes because the criminals know they take a huge risk by engaging in that activity in those areas. There are, of course, other factors, but when you compare areas that initially allowed firearms but later banned them (e.g., Morton Grove, IL), you often find the crime rate rising shortly after the ban was passed, while areas that go the other direction often see a drop in the crime rate (e.g., Kennesaw, GA).

I didn't want to go on a tangent about firearms, because that's not really the point. The point is that when you make the real risk to criminals high, they generally tend to modify their ways, and the overall crime rate drops (or at least tends to shift towards crimes which are less risky). Of course, there will always be a small group of criminals who are essentially unafraid of anything. Laws which enable law-abiding citizens to deal with them effectively will tend to subject those criminals to the hard laws of evolution.
