I'm looking for suggestions on a light tripod and ball head combo.
I need to get up a big hill and every pound counts.
Oddly enough, all the discussions on the forum are about the money/stability ratio.
My current Velbon carbon fiber and Markins M10 are 4 lbs plus a couple of ounces.
I'm thinking about supporting a 30d/24-105f4.
Thanks in advance.

we had Manfrotto 055proB with 488 on top. Wife did not like the weight, handling cold alumimum in winter..etc. I replaced the stack with Gitzo GT-3531S under RRS BH-55. We are both very happy with the lower weight (around 1/3 less), greater stability, and ease of use.

If Mama ain't happy... ;)

Thanks for the suggestions Jay, ben r and MCAsan.
These give me a standard of excellence with which to compare other tripods.
Gathering from B&H and ReallyBigCameras:
The list that follows is model; price; height; weight; load.
Gitzo 1541 $599; 54.3"; 2.5#; 17.6#. (BH listed 1541T discontinued)
Gitzo GT3531s $779 + flatplate$76; 50"; 3.7#; 39.6#.
Feisol 3441T $318; 56.7"; 2.27#; 22#.

I'm happy with my Feisol 3442. Light, tall enough for me, when fully extended (I'm 6') and for a 4 section tripod, the bottom section is more beefy than most other brands. No center column but I have no need for one. That and a Markins M-10...works for me.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Gitzo GT-0541 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs and a Markins Q3T. They both weight about 2 1/2 pounds together.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Feisol

See my signature. Order from Kerry at the Reallybigcameras website. Wish I had bought this tripod years ago. Heading to Alaska in 9 days and will be taking this along. Hiking up and down a river fly fishing for steelhead. Can't think of a better tripod to take along. No center column and that is why I bought this model. I am 6'5" and it works great fully extended. Much more stable as it doesn't have a center column. Goes all the way down for macro shots due to no center column. Hope you are picking up the center column's importance to me. Ha ha... Weighs very little and is built like a brick shet house. What is there not to love?

Thanks Bohdan, Patrick, Dan, hania, and GeeMack.

I should correct the information I wrote above:
the comparable Feisol is the 3441T with the non-rotating legs therefore the price should be $414.

Interesting suggestion of the Gitzo 0541. Its 47" and 1.7#.
So it appears that as tripods go below 2.5#, roughly, they must be made shorter.
This holds true for the discontinued Gitzo 1541T which is 44" and 2.1#.
The available Gitzo 1542T is 46" 2.2# $612.

The only questions I have yet to decide are:
How valuable is 10 additional inches against .4 pounds (1541 vs 1541T)?
Is the Gitzo worth $180 more than the Feisol, 1541 vs. 3441, (not counting that 3441 is a couple inches taller)?

Complete: my Gitzo GT0530 + Markins Q3 at a total weight of 2.5 lbs. ... of course they have updated the model # ... go search and read on naturescapes.net about the Pro Landscape guys who opted for the Fiesol brand and regretted it in the end.

Searched naturescapes.net keyword feisol and rummaged around manually but couldn't find a mention of feisol tripods.
