I have a G5, G9, and G12.

My wife got the G5 as a hand me down a long time ago but it recently started burning up the battery when off so i got her a G12 since i like and use my G9. Now the G5 sits in a drawer. Should I get it repaired or trash it. My 9 year old daughter has a cheap panasonic camera but that could be passed down to my 4 year old and she could get the G5.

started burning up the battery when off

The problem may be... the battery, the charger, or the camera.
Replace the battery.

If that does not make a difference, see if you can connect with someone with a G5 compatible charger -- to borrow, or to charge your battery for you. See if that makes a difference.

If not, maybe the camera has developed a fault.

batery and charger are fine, this was actually a common issue wit new cameras so i was surprised when it happened to an old camera after the burn in period but my wife isn't easy on things
