It is safer for sure, if there is a UV filter, you never really have to clean the actual front lens element, which means no risk to scratching the front element when wiping it clean.

UV filters can be expensive, but it is a lot less scary if you scratch the filter because it can easily be replaced.

I learn something new everytime I go on this forum. I went on the Sigma website and couldn't find a uv filter for my lens...

Pocket as well :)

If any lint makes it on the lens then blow it off with a rocket blower.

I don't plan on carrying my rocket blower with me all the time.

I put it between my wallet

You know what...that's a good idea. I'm still surprised that there isn't a product for this problem.

I put the cap in my pocket and before I replace it on the lens, I blow into it to get rid of any lint or dust. The hard part is trying to remember which pocket I tucked it into.

People that care about their lens.

Not sure how putting a simple plastic cap into your pants pocket could be a danger to your lens... but I have been putting my lens cap in my back pocket for about 30 years now. So far no damage......

Pocket.

Lint is just added padding! ;)

Seriously, it's really not a problem. I have multiple ways of blowing, wiping or brushing any lint of a lens cap, if really needed. Heck, I can use my shirt tail, if necessary.

I "just say no" to UV/protection filters. Generally a waste of money. Especially the cheap, ones that can make a mess of your images.

Yeah, I have some UV/protection filters for my lenses (high quality, multi-coated), stored in my camera bag until they are really needed (shooting in a sand storm or at the seashore).

You're either cleaning the lens or cleaning the filter. Makes no difference, except that any dust specks on the filter are a little further from the lens so will be more "in focus" at smaller apertures on wide lenses (esp. if focused close).

And how much "protection" against physical impact can you realistically expect a thin piece of of glass? It's ever bit as possible that a shattered filter might be driven into the front of a lens and actually do damage, rather than provide some sort of mythical protection.

Lens hoods do a much better job protecting my lens while it's in use... Lens caps (with or without lint) do the protection job when it's not in use.

Getting down off of soapbox now.

I have a microfiber lens cleaning cloth in my left, front pants pocket all the time. That works to wipe off dust or lint when needed. There's also a bulb blower in my camera bag pocket (along with more microfiber cloths, lens cleaning fluid, a soft brush and sensor cleaning stuff. There's also "computer monitor wipes" and "canned air" in one of my travel cases, if needed for cleaning.

I have a cap leash on every single lens I own.

+1

To dammed expensive for what they are. And the Canon ones (pinching from the skinny edge) are just plain stupid. Center pinch is such a simple concept and not rocket science to design/mfg.

I care about mine but I'm really not worried about a bit of fluff in my pocket!

Mine go in my pocket and I give them a quick blow before putting them back on my lenses. Never had any problems.

Hang out here long enough and you will have room for multiple lens caps in your wallet.

I'm a pocket guy and it has never been an issue. I use to use a leash, but I found the dangling lens cap to be annoying. Especially if you are flipping from landscape to portrait and back a lot, or if it is windy out.

edit: oops, wrong quote (fixed)

in the bag or wherever I was when the lens got mounted, unless shooting somewhere that might run me up against a security guard or anyone that thinks i shouldn't be shooting, then i carry it in a pocket so i can put it on and point to it, the international symbol for "not shooting now, move along".
