I've had good experiences with their products. They aren't the cheapest out there but they are far from being the most expensive. I've always considered them a nice middle of the road option :)

I'm a very strong believer of "you get what you pay for"

Elinchrom are some of the highest rated flashes and offer some amazing portable options. They still aren't as much as some of the profoto sets.

elinchrom are pretty much mid way in the price point of strobes, if you find them expensive there are cheaper alternatives

when you buy into strobes you are buying into a system, you will need modifiers and accessories to fit them , elinchrom offers that

a lot of the cheaper strobes have issues that you may have to work around, some people are willing to pay more to avoid those issues

anything you plug into a wall can fail, most strobes do work reliably, it's really how well they work that counts

your question is not really an easy one to answer , only you know your budget, and if your budget is not elinchrom, then yes they are expensive :)

There are a lot of things that go into a retail price.
Two disadvantages for Elinchrom, selling in the US, is its European origin, and the currency exchange, as well as the three level distribution model they use.

I bought them because the were less expensive and still considered a good value. I had fully intended to get Profoto but reading here on POTN and my local dealer who sells a lot of Profoto and Elinchrom showed me the value for what I was going to do. I have never regretted getting Elinchrom and I think they are 3 hrs old.

I'd consider their products middle of the road as well. I'm not sold on their quality and the skyports are the flimsiest POS wireless trigger systems I've come across.

The skyports are decent, but I wouldn't compare them to pocketwizard plus 2 or the multimax

The new Skyports are fine. I'm moving away from Eli but lack of quality (whether that be output consistency, color shifts, build quality, etc) was never an issue for me.

There are many things to nitpick and wish were better with any system or piece of gear but the reality is that Elinchrom's provide rock solid performance and are very reliable.

We can always find anecdotal accounts of failure and nightmarish customer service but on the whole that's not at all the case with majority of Elinchrom owners.

Many people that shoot with Elinchrom do so because of the performance and complete product line ranging from entry level monolights to high end pack and head systems, as well as a great selection of accessories and modifiers, some of which are considered industry standard.

I completely agree about the Skyports and believe they dropped the ball on that one.

When one is getting ready to invest in a product line and its capabilities there are a number of elements that have to be considered.

Elinchrom, along with Profoto, Paul C Buff, Speedtron and others each have their uniques capabilities.

There is not a perfect lighting solution, there are only tools that have specifications that one has to evaluate relative to their particular requirements.
